|Description:||What does it mean to “be human in this most inhuman of ages,” to “transfigure the evil and stricken world” with “words of hope”?|
This retreat will explore these questions of Thomas Merton, and his responses as he continues to speak into the heart of our turbulent times, beckoning us into an expansive, visionary political life open to unknown futures. We’ll combine guided contemplation with discussion of Merton’s late classics, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander and Raids on the Unspeakable.
Gary Hall is a Methodist minister and lecturer in practical theology at The Queen’’s Foundation, Birmingham. He is an editor of The Merton Journal and has contributed to Merton conferences, study days and retreats for more than 20 years within the UK and internationally; he was keynote speaker at the Merton Conference in Oakham (near Launde) in 2014. He continues to speak and write about how Merton addresses some of the most critical cultural, political and social realities of our times.
