Launde 900 Hymn Competition

Launde 900 Hymn Competition

From the summer of 2019 until the summer of 2020 Launde Abbey is celebrating its 900th anniversary, marking nine centuries of life as a house of prayer and hospitality. To mark this milestone in our life we’re launching a national competition to find new hymns or worship songs which capture the spirit of Launde and which can be used at services and events during the anniversary year and beyond.

We’re looking for hymns and songs which express some of Launde’s key values, including prayer, worship, hospitality, silence, reflection, retreat and more. The winning hymns and songs will feel ‘at home’ being sung at Launde during our 900th anniversary celebrations, but be general enough to be used in other contexts too.

The competition is open to all UK hymn writers, whether published, unpublished or aspiring! We’re looking for either standalone texts (which can be sung to an existing public domain hymn tune) or complete compositions (text and music).

A panel of judges will select two winning hymns or songs which will be used during our ‘Launde 900’ gala weekend in July 2019 and at events throughout the anniversary year. They will also be published on the Launde website (hopefully with recorded versions from the gala weekend). Each winning composer will enjoy two nights at Launde Abbey for two people.

Closing date for submissions: 5 May 2019. Full rules, terms and conditions here.
