Join us for an hour of enchanting classical music in our medieval chapel\, followed by the famous Launde Abbey Cream Tea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescribed by The Times – London as “…a flautist and a half…”\, Lisa Nelsen is internationally recognised for her versatility as a soloist\, chamber and orchestra member\, as well as an educator and mentor. Having participated in the 2024 Guinness World Record event with Donne’s “Let Her Music Play”\, new projects have included working with composers at MusicFest in Aberystwyth\, Cardiff University Music Department\, and an incredibly special concert in Oxford at the Jacqueline Du Pré Hall\, curated by Kenneth Hesketh and the Royal College of Music. Lisa performs and collaborates with artists such as Julian Metzger\, Michelle Santiago\, Eleanor Turner and Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas\, planning programmes together for the next 2 years. Lisa performed with the National Youth Concert Band\, premiering a new concerto for flute by Bill Connor. She has presented online concerts during the pandemic with her chamber ensembles and participated in the Tampere and E-Flute Festivals. Her contribution to the hashtag ‘100 Days of Practice’ on Instagram (four times!) was a means to improve her own consistency in her work and inspire onlookers to ‘have a go’. As Chair of the British Flute Society\, Lisa relished contact with the community of players around the country. The position offered opportunities to share in activities and chat through mutual interests in the flute. She’s a professor of flute at Junior Guildhall School of Music\, and is an Artist for Yamaha Classical Division International playing on a 14-karat 900-series flute.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGerman-born cellist Julian Metzger is a versatile and compelling musical voice whose career spans concerto playing\, chamber music and orchestral performance. Raised in a family where music was both vocation and inheritance—his father a music teacher and choral conductor\, his uncle a professional cellist—Julian began playing the cello at the age of four\, forging an early and enduring relationship with the instrument.His formative years led him from his native Bad Berleburg to England\, where he studied at Wells Cathedral School under Dr Ioan Davies\, former cellist of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet. He continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Stefan Popov\, later refining his artistry through private mentorship with Raphael Wallfisch. Along the way\, musical encounters with David Strange\, Steve Doane\, Yfrah Neaman\, Paul Roberts and Norbert Brainin further shaped his expressive depth and interpretative insight. \n\n\n\nAs a concerto soloist\, Julian brings intensity\, elegance and narrative clarity to the stage. He has appeared with a range of orchestras under conductors including Alexander Walker\, Adrian Brown and Jacques Cohen\, performing works from the central cello repertoire alongside lesser-known concertos by composers such as Tartini\, Monn\, Bridge\, Kabalevsky and Miaskovsky.  \n\n\n\nChamber music lies at the heart of Julian’s musical identity. He has collaborated with artists including Christopher Redgate\, Lisa Nelsen\, Giovanni Guzzo and Marco Fatichenti\, and has appeared at festivals such as the International Casals Festival\, Buckingham Summer Festival and Musicfest Aberystwyth. A committed advocate for ensemble music\, he founded the Metzger Ensemble and co-founded Enigma14 and the English String Trio\, exploring repertoire from intimate string works to adventurous mixed ensembles. \n\n\n\nAlongside performing\, Julian is a dedicated teacher\, working across leading schools and universities and maintaining a busy private studio. Many of his students now study at major conservatoires. Nigel Cameron (Irish whistles and percussion) and Julie Cameron-Hall (classically trained fiddle) are both accomplished singers\, songwriters and musicians\, performing original songs\, instrumentals and timeless melodies. \n\n\n\nTheir concerts are presented in two halves with an interval for refreshments\, combining uplifting and reflective music with stories inspired by Celtic Saints such as Patrick\, Brendan and Hilda. Using the traditional moss and wire technique\, you’ll create a fresh and fragrant masterpiece to take home and proudly display. \n\n\n\nYou’ll have access to a generous array of lush\, seasonal foliage — including aromatic Pine\, Spruce\, and Eucalyptus — along with a beautiful selection of natural decorations. We hope to include some materials foraged from our very own grounds\, making your wreath not only unique but also a true reflection of Launde Abbey’s winter landscape. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned crafter\, this workshop is suitable for all abilities and offers a wonderful opportunity to unwind\, get creative\, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the abbey during this special time of year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLed by Lizzie Lonsdale \n\n\n\nLizzie is a passionate floral enthusiast and devoted mum of one (who she even named after a flower!). Our Quiet Day will ponder the words of Zechariah to reflect on a life of holiness and hope in the light of God’s new dawn arriving in the birth of Jesus. This will be a time to tune into the heart beat of the old priest’s prayer as he anticipated a new future for the people of God. \n\n\n\nJohn Rackley offers this day as a gentle pause before the demands of the pre-Christmas season are upon us. He is a member of Launde Abbey’s College of Chaplains and a minister at Christchurch in Clarendon Park\, Leicester. We will be immersed in the beauty of scripture and song\, and you can stay afterwards for mulled wine and mince pies. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to be welcoming the Aylesbury Consort of Voices for a second year running\, an auditioned acappella choir\, to lead us in our music. The choir performs to support local churches and charities across Buckinghamshire\, Oxfordshire\, and Hertfordshire\, with some members being professional musicians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvent marks the beginning of the Christian year. It is a period of longing\, hope and expectation. As we approach the darkest time of the year the Christian community looks forward to the dawning of a new light\, to a time when God’s promises to his people\, down through history\, are fulfilled. The readings from the Hebrew Scriptures articulate the hopes of the community of faith and the nature of God’s love. \n\n\n\nAdvent is characterised by the experience of waiting and watching and by the contrasting themes of light and darkness\, judgement and mercy\, life and death. These things remind us that Advent is not merely a countdown to Christmas and the birth of a baby in a stable in Bethlehem. Join us for an hour of enchanting classical music in our medieval chapel\, followed by the famous Launde Abbey Cream Tea. \n\n\n\nCharlotte Rowan (Violin) and Charlotte Stevenson (Piano) \n\n\n\nCharlotte performs extensively as a recitalist in the UK and regularly performs at prestigious venues\, chamber music societies and festivals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in Scotland\, Charlotte was invited at age 16 to study at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore\, USA. Selected as concertmistress of the Conservatory Orchestra in her first year\, she subsequently performed under the conductor and pianist Leon Fleischer and featured on the Washington Performing Arts Series with Rob Kapilow. During her studies\, she was invited to perform for Justice of the Supreme Court\, Sonia Sotomayor in Washington DC and participated in masterclasses with Midori and the Juilliard String Quartet. \n\n\n\nWith her duo partner\, pianist Charlotte Stevenson\, she has given concert tours around Northern and Central Scotland\, Yorkshire\, Wales\, Southern England\, the Midlands\, Essex\, Kent and East Anglia. They have performed in many of the country’s finest cathedrals including Ely\, Chichester\, Winchester\, Ripon\, Chelmsford\, Lincoln and Manchester and have given acclaimed appearances at festivals including Edinburgh\, Wetherby\, Buckingham\, East Devon\, Harwich\, Horsham and Crail. \n\n\n\nIn September 2023 she travelled to the Orkney Islands as part of a Scottish tour. Alongside her regular recital performances she was also invited by Orkney International Science Festival to lead a workshop on violin-making and sound production. \n\n\n\nA regular soloist with orchestras in both America and Britain\, Charlotte has performed concerti by Tchaikovsky\, Sibelius\, Mendelssohn\, Mozart\, Dvorak\, Glazunov and Elgar. In October 2019 she was artist-in-residence at Wetherby Arts Festival where she performed the Bruch Violin Concerto with Leeds Symphony Orchestra under conductor Martin Binks MBE. \n\n\n\nCharlotte is based in Cambridge\, UK and teaches violin and chamber music at the Perse School\, St Faith’s Cambridge and King’s School\, Ely. \n\n\n\nIn addition to her music\, Charlotte enjoys learning languages\, visiting beautiful gardens and walking in the mountains from Norway to the Bavarian Alps. \n\n\n\nCharlotte plays a Fridolin Rusch violin (2005) from Memmingen\, Bavaria. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharlotte Stevenson enjoys a varied career as a pianist\, singer and harpist. She gained her LRAM Diploma studying piano with Mary Moore and Janette Lamb. In recent years\, Charlotte has been the regular accompanist for Charlotte Rowan\, performing at chamber music societies\, concert series and festivals throughout the UK.
