DESCRIPTION:This Advent Quiet Day will be led by John Rackley\, one of our regular retreat leaders and a member of the Abbey’s College of Chaplains. \n\n\n\nEach day the Morning Prayer of the Church is a call to Advent living as we pray the Benedictus. Our Quiet Day will ponder the words of Zechariah to reflect on a life of holiness and hope in the light of God’s new dawn arriving in the birth of Jesus. This will be a time to tune into the heart beat of the old priest’s prayer as he anticipated a new future for the people of God. \n\n\n\nJohn Rackley offers this day as a gentle pause before the demands of the pre-Christmas season are upon us. He is a member of Launde Abbey’s College of Chaplains and a minister at Christchurch in Clarendon Park\, Leicester. SUMMARY:Waiting for the Light: Music and Readings for Advent
DESCRIPTION:Amidst the warm glow of candlelight\, join us at Launde Abbey for an afternoon of Music and Readings from 4:00 pm to prepare for the season. We will be immersed in the beauty of scripture and song\, and you can stay afterwards for mulled wine and mince pies. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to be welcoming the Aylesbury Consort of Voices for a second year running\, an auditioned acappella choir\, to lead us in our music. The choir performs to support local churches and charities across Buckinghamshire\, Oxfordshire\, and Hertfordshire\, with some members being professional musicians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvent marks the beginning of the Christian year. It is a period of longing\, hope and expectation. As we approach the darkest time of the year the Christian community looks forward to the dawning of a new light\, to a time when God’s promises to his people\, down through history\, are fulfilled. The readings from the Hebrew Scriptures articulate the hopes of the community of faith and the nature of God’s love. \n\n\n\nAdvent is characterised by the experience of waiting and watching and by the contrasting themes of light and darkness\, judgement and mercy\, life and death. These things remind us that Advent is not merely a countdown to Christmas and the birth of a baby in a stable in Bethlehem. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the perfect Sunday afternoon out…  \n\n\n\nWe look forward to continuing our Launde Abbey Concert Series throughout 2025\, bringing you intimate classical performances from the finest musicians. Join us for an hour of enchanting classical music in our medieval chapel\, followed by the famous Launde Abbey Cream Tea. \n\n\n\nCharlotte Rowan (Violin) and Charlotte Stevenson (Piano) \n\n\n\nCharlotte performs extensively as a recitalist in the UK and regularly performs at prestigious venues\, chamber music societies and festivals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in Scotland\, Charlotte was invited at age 16 to study at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore\, USA. Selected as concertmistress of the Conservatory Orchestra in her first year\, she subsequently performed under the conductor and pianist Leon Fleischer and featured on the Washington Performing Arts Series with Rob Kapilow. During her studies\, she was invited to perform for Justice of the Supreme Court\, Sonia Sotomayor in Washington DC and participated in masterclasses with Midori and the Juilliard String Quartet. \n\n\n\nWith her duo partner\, pianist Charlotte Stevenson\, she has given concert tours around Northern and Central Scotland\, Yorkshire\, Wales\, Southern England\, the Midlands\, Essex\, Kent and East Anglia. They have performed in many of the country’s finest cathedrals including Ely\, Chichester\, Winchester\, Ripon\, Chelmsford\, Lincoln and Manchester and have given acclaimed appearances at festivals including Edinburgh\, Wetherby\, Buckingham\, East Devon\, Harwich\, Horsham and Crail. \n\n\n\nIn September 2023 she travelled to the Orkney Islands as part of a Scottish tour. Alongside her regular recital performances she was also invited by Orkney International Science Festival to lead a workshop on violin-making and sound production. \n\n\n\nA regular soloist with orchestras in both America and Britain\, Charlotte has performed concerti by Tchaikovsky\, Sibelius\, Mendelssohn\, Mozart\, Dvorak\, Glazunov and Elgar. In October 2019 she was artist-in-residence at Wetherby Arts Festival where she performed the Bruch Violin Concerto with Leeds Symphony Orchestra under conductor Martin Binks MBE. \n\n\n\nCharlotte is based in Cambridge\, UK and teaches violin and chamber music at the Perse School\, St Faith’s Cambridge and King’s School\, Ely. \n\n\n\nIn addition to her music\, Charlotte enjoys learning languages\, visiting beautiful gardens and walking in the mountains from Norway to the Bavarian Alps. \n\n\n\nCharlotte plays a Fridolin Rusch violin (2005) from Memmingen\, Bavaria. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharlotte Stevenson enjoys a varied career as a pianist\, singer and harpist. She gained her LRAM Diploma studying piano with Mary Moore and Janette Lamb. In recent years\, Charlotte has been the regular accompanist for Charlotte Rowan\, performing at chamber music societies\, concert series and festivals throughout the UK. Join us for an hour of enchanting classical music in our medieval chapel\, followed by the famous Launde Abbey Cream Tea. \n\n\n\nUppingham School’s Invitation Concert \n\n\n\nThe leading young music scholars of Uppingham School are invited to collaborate with their teachers for an afternoon of chamber music. They will be led by professors of the Royal College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama\, violinist Michał Ćwiżewicz and clarinettist Andy Webster.  \n\n\n\nPerformers – Music Scholars and Faculty of Uppingham School \n\n\n\n·  Andy Webster – bass clarinet\, clarinet \n\n\n\n·  Alex Herratt – clarinet \n\n\n\n·  Min Chen – bassoon \n\n\n\n·  Michał Ćwiżewicz – violin\, viola \n\n\n\n·  Anne McChesney – violin \n\n\n\n·  Grace Hillis – violin \n\n\n\n·  Arina Paek – violin \n\n\n\nAndrew Webster studied the clarinet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the guidance of Antony Pay and Thea King. Following his studies\, he embarked on a distinguished freelance career\, giving regular solo performances at prestigious venues including The Wigmore Hall. From 1997 to 2004\, Andrew was a member of the Orchestra of English National Opera\, and between 2002 and 2012 he served as Principal Clari net with the Glyndebourne Touring Opera Orchestra. Alongside these positions\, he has continued to work extensively with many of the UK’s leading orchestras\, most notably The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, The Philharmonia Orchestra\, The BBC Symphony Orchestra\, and The London Sinfonietta. In 1994\, Andrew was appointed Professor of Clarinet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama\, where he taught for 31 years. From September 2025\, he takes up the role of Visiting Professor at Guildhall. Andrew has also made a significant contribution to music education at Uppingham School\, where he joined the staff in 2013 as Head of Wind\, Brass and Percussion. From September 2025\, he becomes the school’s Director of Music. \n\n\n\nBritish–Polish violinist Michał Ćwiżewicz has performed across Europe\, the Middle East and the USA\, with broadcasts on BBC Television and Radio and Polish national television. He appears regularly with the Cwizewicz Brothers violin duo and directs the Ognisko Chamber Ensemble. For ten years he was the violinist of the Minerva Piano Trio and their recent recording Dance! has brought much critical acclaim. Michał teaches at the Royal College of Music and is Head of Strings at Uppingham School. He holds postgraduate degrees from the Royal College of Music and Imperial College\, the latter a Master’s in Aeronautical Engineering. Prizes enabled his studies at the Royal College of Music\, Guildhall School\, Paris Conservatoire and Escuela Superior in Madrid\, working with members of the Alban Berg\, Arpeggione and Ysaÿe quartets. He has performed for HM King Charles III and was presented to Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace’s Young Artists’ Reception. Between them\, they can play 13 different clarinets (although not all at the same time)\, ranging from the small but powerful Eb clarinet\, through the Bb\, A and basset horn\, to the large and sonorous bass clarinet. Their repertoire is equally varied\, incorporating an entertaining mix of original pieces and well-known arrangements. In this concert\, they will be whisking you around the world with music from Europe\, America and the UK. Among the original compositions are fantastic quartets by Nigel Wood\, Paul Harvey and Clare Grundman. There are also excellent arrangements of beautiful pieces by Albinoni\, Paganini and Mozart. \n\n\n\nAbout Christine Taylor\nChristine was brought up in Leicestershire and played with the county’s youth orchestra before studying the clarinet in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the notable clarinettists Jack Brymer and Joy Farrell. Moving to Essex after college\, Christine enjoyed playing freelance for musical theatre and The Southend Philharmonic for a number of years. Now a self-employed clarinet and saxophone teacher in Leicestershire\, she has also enjoyed conducting various youth groups in the county over the years\, including the Leicestershire Schools Music Service Training Orchestra\, Junior Band\, and the Junior and Senior Clarinet Choirs. Passionate about giving talented young players opportunities\, she has also adjudicated on various competition panels\, and has recently coached one of her pupils to become the Bardi Symphony Orchestra’s own ‘Young Musician of the Year’ (2024) \n\n\n\nIn previous seasons Christine has performed the Mozart\, Copland\, and Finzi clarinet concertos\, Strauss Duet Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon and Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for four winds with the Knighton Chamber Orchestra\, and Finzi 5 Bagatelles with Stamford Chamber Orchestra. She also regularly plays with The Bardi Symphony Orchestra\, the Helix Ensemble\, and is a founder member of The Beaufort Wind Quintet and The Acer Clarinet Quartet. \n\n\n\nChristine is committed to music education and offering access to music in Leicester for everyone. She is on the Board of Trustees for both The Bardi Symphony Orchestra and Leicester International Music Festival\, helping to create educational partnerships and opportunities for young people. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Verity Morris\nVerity Morris studied the clarinet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then at the Royal Academy of Music. She has been performing in public since the age of nine\, sometimes as a soloist\, sometimes as a member of an orchestra and in every sort of ensemble in between. She has worked with the following ensembles for over ten years; Welsh National Opera\, PM Contemporary Music Ensemble\, The Welsh Sinfonia (principal) and Latitude. She has been privileged to work with many distinguished musicians such as Pierre Boulez\, Owain Arwel Hughes\, Andrew Mariner\, Thea King\, Angela Malsbury\, Jose Carreras and Bryn Terfel. Chamber music is her passion. Venues for solo and chamber music recitals include: Barbican Hall London\, Artworkers Guild London\, Braithwaite Hall Croyden\, St. David’s Hall Cardiff\, Cheltenham Town Hall\, British Embassy Brussels\, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama\, New Radnor Music Club\, Royal Holloway University Music Club\, Rhymney Valley Music Club\, Hinckley Music Club\, Bangor University\, British Music Information Centre London\, Taliesin Arts Centre Swansea and Late Music Festival York. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Anne Mortimer\nAnne Mortimer gained a clarinet diploma with distinction in 2015. Anne teaches clarinet and saxophone at Catmose College in Oakham alongside a private practise. She has directed various clarinet\, saxophone and single reed choirs and can be regularly found travelling the U.K. to meet up with like minded colleagues to rehearse and perform in chamber groups. More recently\, Anne has enjoyed performing with Leicester Symphony Orchestra\, Leicestershire Sinfonia\, Rutland Sinfonia\, Bardi Wind Orchestra and regularly guests with Rutland Big Band as clarinettist/lead alto for their Glenn Miller evenings.  \n\n\n\n\nAbout Peter Fielding\nPeter Fielding studied clarinet at The Royal Manchester College of Music\, being one of only a very small number to gain a Performers Diploma with Distinction (ARMCM dist.). He was Principal Clarinet in D’Oyly Carte Opera Company before joining The Welsh Philharmonia (Orchestra of Welsh National Opera) as sub principal clarinet and later as principal Bass Clarinet whilst still playing clarinet as required. After 38 years with the Orchestra he retired in the summer of 2009. \n\n\n\nHe was a Clarinet and Bass Clarinet tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and a member of the tutorial staff at Cardiff University School of Music for thirty years\, until moving home to the Midlands in 2015. She combines the three strands of her illustrious career as a performer\, teacher and composer. Her two solo albums gained critical acclaim\, showcasing her imaginative programming on both pedal and lever harp. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I love the album … a diversity of music\, a very accomplished technique and your heart shining through” Alan Stivell \n\n\n\nEira is committed to introducing the harp to wider audiences\, resulting in an eclectic range of work: recordings with the Black Dyke Brass Band and the heavy metal group Venom\, tours with the Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir and with Aled Jones for Songs of Praise\, playing in Spain for HRH the Prince of Wales … and appearing in two episodes of Coronation Street\, watched by 16 million people. She has a Master of Music degree in Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music and is a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music\, a Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music and the London College of Music. She studied with Nicola Hall\, Michael Lewin\, and Craig Ogden. \n\n\n\nFor many years she was a regular contributor to Guitar International Magazine\, writing articles on guitar playing. \n\n\n\nShe has worked as an examiner for Trinity Guildhall School of Music and taught in numerous schools and colleges. She is currently a guitar tutor at the University of Leicester. She has broadcast on BBC radio and played on TV in Antigua and the UK. She plays with orchestras and chamber music ensembles and has given performances at the Royal Festival Hall\, London\, the Bridgewater Hall\, Manchester and De Montfort Hall\, Leicester. \n\n\n\nShe has recorded three albums of her own music – Promise\, Evocation and Heartstrings. Her compositions have been described as: “mature\, melodic\, interestingly harmonised\, lovely little pieces that come from the pen of a lady whose CD I have played a good number of times since reviewing it!” (Classical Guitar Magazine.) Join us for an hour of enchanting classical music in our medieval chapel\, followed by the famous Launde Abbey Cream Tea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe duo Ćwiżewicz Brothers is a unique chamber ensemble of two British-Polish violinists. They have been performing together since 2014 but their music-making began a decade and a half earlier when 13-year-old Michał began teaching 2-year-old Filip. Their performances include their own arrangements of classical and folk music\, as well as hidden gems from the duo repertoire and new commissions from contemporary composers. They have collaborated with the Harlem Quartet\, and the Ognisko Ensemble and have performed together as soloists with the Górecki Chamber Orchestra. While they both separately studied with celebrated violinists\, their unusual musical upbringing also immersed them in the rich folk music of the Carpathian Mountains in Eastern Europe as well as the very different sound world of the Javanese Gamelan\, which they played at London’s Southbank Centre throughout their youth. Their varied musical interests have led to two new duo works: Delirium by Richard Birchall and Quartets for Two Violins and Balinese Gender Wayang by Nick Gray. Drawing on Polish Highlanders’ folk tunes and Szymanowski’s ballet The Brigands\, their own piece Tatra Melodies was premiered in Warsaw in 2015 together with dance and original choreography. \n\n\n\nMichał Ćwiżewicz has given concerts across Europe\, the Middle East and USA and his playing has been broadcast on BBC television\, live on Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ and Polish national television.  He leads the Górecki Chamber Orchestra and Ognisko Chamber Ensemble and his recent recording Dance! as part of the Minerva Piano Trio has brought much critical acclaim. A sought-after teacher\, he is both a violin professor at the Royal College of Music and Head of Strings at Uppingham School.  He studied at the Royal College of Music\, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and with the Ysaÿe and Alban Berg string quartets.  Also studying at Imperial College\, he was awarded his Masters in Aeronautical Engineering in 2007.  He was presented to Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace’s Young Artist’s Reception and has performed for HM King Charles III. \n\n\n\nFilip Ćwiżewicz is in demand as a soloist\, chamber musician and orchestral player. He has performed at Wigmore Hall\, Barbican’s Milton Court and live on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’. He leads the Tempest Symphony Orchestra\, with whom he also has performed as a soloist in the Tchaikovsky and Sibelius violin concertos. He has performed recitals and as a soloist with an orchestra in the UK and in France\, Germany\, Italy\, Poland and South Korea. Born in London\, he was first taught by his brother Michał. His studies took him to the Purcell School of Music\, then as a student of Itzhak Rashkovsky at the Royal College of Music and most recently\, as a postgraduate student at the Kraków Academy of Music with Poland’s foremost soloist\, Kaja Danczowska.
