DESCRIPTION:This retreat in now fully booked. We are running another Icon Painting Retreat in December. \n\n\n\nThese five-day courses with professional iconographer Peter Murphy are suitable for all levels including beginners. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will learn the traditional techniques and ancient methods for producing their own hand-painted icon in the Byzantine style. Each course will concentrate on reproducing either a half-length or head and shoulders icon from a number of prototypes\, including Christ\, The Mother of God and various different saints such as St Francis and St Nicholas. \n\n\n\nOver the week the course members will learn traditional gilding techniques with 24-carat gold leaf for backgrounds and halos and how to make and use egg tempera paint fresh each day from free-range egg yolks and organic mineral pigments.  \n\n\n\nAs the course unfolds and participants settle into the gentle and prayerful daily rhythm of painting and gilding Peter will introduce course members to the fundamental theological principles involved in the creation of an icon\, its spiritual meaning and symbolism. \n\n\n\nAll materials\, including a handmade gessoed Serbian lime wood icon panel\, gold leaf and organic mineral pigments\, stage-by-stage worksheets and the use of specialist gilding tools and professional quality paint brushes are included in the price of the course. \n\n\n\nAll participants need to bring to the course is themselves\, an apron\, a good pair of scissors\, and an open mind. \n\n\n\nPeter Murphy\n\n\n\nPeter Murphy was born in Leeds and was educated at the University of East London. He trained with iconographer Guillem Ramos Poqui in London. He was Vice Chairman of the Society of Tempera Painters and is a member of the British Association of Iconographers. He has been commissioned by a number of churches in the UK and has also been employed by a number of museums and has recently undertaken three major commissions for Hereford Cathedral. SUMMARY:Women in the Bible
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBishop Graham Kings will bring to Launde seven paintings of ‘Women in the Bible’ which he and his wife\, Alison\, commissioned Silvia Dimitrova\, a Bulgarian icon writer and painter\, to paint over 17 years. Sarah\, Miriam\, Ruth\, Esther\, Magdalene\, Lydia and Priscilla. He will be exploring them\, interactively and prayerfully\, through biblical commentary\, his expository poetry on them and listening to the anthems written for them by Tristan Latchford\, a composer based in Cambridge. There will be space for personal prayer and creativity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Graham Kings\, in retirement in Cambridge\, is Hon Assistant Bishop\, in the Diocese of Ely. Previously he served as Mission Theologian in the Anglican Communion\, Bishop of Sherborne\, Vicar of Islington\, founding Director of the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide\, and Vice Principal of St Andrew’s College\, Kabare\, Kenya. Together we’ll reflect on the season of Epiphany\, finishing with the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. Our stitching will take inspiration from these ideas – perhaps stars\, water\, wine or camels. \n\n\n\nThis is a relaxing time of sewing\, short talks\, prayer and poetry\, with space to think and create in a peaceful and friendly setting. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome\, whatever your sewing skill level. This is picked up in John’s Gospel in what has come to be known as the seven ‘I am’ statements of Jesus … \n\n\n\n\nI am the Bread of Life\n\n\n\nI am the Light of the World\n\n\n\nI am the Door\n\n\n\nI am the Good Shepherd\n\n\n\nI am the Resurrection and the Life\n\n\n\nI am the Way and the Truth and the Life\n\n\n\nI am the Vine\n\n\n\n\nIn this retreat\, we will pray with and through the I am statements of Jesus in John’s gospel.  Using the textile art of Jane Allen we will engage with each of the I am statements of Jesus in turn. We will also pray with the narrative of the woman at the well using the artwork of Ally Barrett and the words of Jesus: I\, the one speaking to you\, I am He. There will be an invitation to use more traditional ways of praying with the text\, including lectio divina and imaginative contemplation. There will also be the invitation to use various art and craft materials to pray with\, in a way that enables us to connect with God through more creative approaches. \n\n\n\nThis retreat will be led by Chris and Rhona Knight. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris was a research scientist for many years until he changed direction after completing a PhD in Apologetics\, working in the area of apologetics and teaching doctrine at Lincoln School of Theology. Now retired\, he has more time to enjoy chess\, bird watching and photography. He is married to Rhona and they have three grown sons. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRhona is a member of the College of Chaplains at Launde Abbey. SUMMARY:Living\, Breathing\, and Moving: Connecting with God with Our Whole Body
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur bodies are a sacred space and a holy threshold for encountering God and discerning God’s voice and will for our lives. During this four-day retreat\, guests will experience a variety of body-based prayer practices and opportunities to grow in awareness and understanding of how our body’s design and wisdom foster a deep and fulfilling prayer life with God. The retreat is designed for those with limited as well as full movement\, with options of using both the chair or the floor as we pray.  If you would like to use the floor\, please bring your exercise mat with you. \n\n\n\nLed by Hope Stockman and Rhona Knight \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHope is a Spiritual Director\, RYT500\, and experienced whole-body wellness guide who is passionate about curating spaces for others to connect and communicate with God through their bodies in every season of life and to discover the goodness\, the fullness of joy and profound peace that God has designed into each of us.
