SUMMARY:The Practice of Joy: CS Lewis Retreat ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn this Creationtide retreat\, we explore the topic of joy with C S Lewis\, author of the Narnia Chronicles (nature was one of the chief mediums through which joy came to him). We will explore the different aspects of the subject that he so delights in; finding joy in creation\, discovering how we can share the joy\, learning about different modes and manifestations of joy\, anticipating the joy of heaven\, and working out how joy could become our daily ‘practice’.  In his autobiography\, based around the concept of joy\, Lewis said ‘In a sense the central story of my life is about nothing else’. \n\n\n\nThis is a retreat for the refreshment of the spirit as Andy Swinford leads us on a deep dive into the joy-filled life and writings of C S Lewis (no prior knowledge needed!). The wind of joy breathes through both his stories and non-fiction and we will draw close to God by using the insights they provide as jumping-off points for our own experiences of joyous wonder. There will be space for reflection\, walking\, prayer\, and enjoying God’s wonderful creation in the beautiful grounds and surroundings of Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAndy Swinford delivers multimedia presentations and online classes about C S Lewis\, as well as leading retreats on the spiritual enrichment to be gained from the writings of the two friends Lewis and Tolkien. He is the author of ‘The Practice of Joy: insights from the stories of C S Lewis’ (Grove) and a contributor to ‘The Christian Tradition in English Literature’ (Zondervan). He lives in Birmingham and is a former teacher of English Literature. Since retiring from teaching beekeeping has become one of his chief joys. \n\n\n\n Retreat price: £495 (standard room) or £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 23rd June 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Rooted and Grounded: Going Deeper Into Spiritual Practice ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Rooted and Grounded: Going Deeper Into Spiritual Practice. \n\n\n\nA retreat hosted jointly by Renovaré Britain & Ireland (renovare.org.uk) and the Launde Abbey community (laundeabbey.org.uk)  \n\n\n\nPaul shared with the Ephesians his yearning “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith as you are being rooted and grounded in love“ (Ephesians 3.17). Do you want to develop those same deeper spiritual roots? Would you like to be able to cultivate a listening heart? Do you long to be transformed to become more like Christ?  \n\n\n\nRooted and Grounded is a retreat for those who want to tap into the rich wisdom and experience of the various Christian spiritual traditions: contemplative and charismatic\, catholic and evangelical\, political and personal. We’ll take time to find rest and refreshment in prayer\, worship\, silence and rest. And we’ll explore a wide range of spiritual practices you can take away with you to deepen your life of faith. You might want to be more resilient in the face of exhausting demands. You might be looking for a deeper foundation for your ministry. You might be wrestling with the question: how do I live a flourishing life? If so\, this retreat is for you.  \n\n\n\nThe team for this retreat is the Revd Roy Searle\, the Revd Rachel Hudson\, the Revd Alison Myers\, and the Revd Chris Webb.   \n\n\n\nRevd Roy Searle\n\n\n\nRoy is a Companion and one of the founders of the Northumbria Community. He has served as a past President of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and is a founding member of Renovare Britain and Ireland. A popular conference speaker\, writer\, retreat leader\, pioneer mentor and spiritual director\, Roy is passionate about encouraging people to love God\, listen well\, think deeply\, and live authentically and generously. He is an associate with the Northumbrian collective and The Commons Cooperative. He is married to Shirley and lives in their beloved Northumberland. They have four children and eight grandchildren. \n\n\n\nRachel Hudson\n\n\n\nRachel Hudson has a background in teaching and youth work which led towards psychotherapy as a second career. She has worked in that field for 25 years\, specialising in work with church ministers of all denominations and in trauma practice. She has led retreats for over 20 years\, usually creative\, active and biblically based\, developing aspects of the spiritual formation Renovare is committed to. Ordained as an Anglican minister late in life ( a third career!) she served for 7 years before retirement and is now enjoying new developments in pastoral supervision and retreats. She still offers training\, and has written material for new books\, alongside being a contributor to Daily Bread Bible reading notes. Rachel is an adoptive parent to 2 adult children with 3 grandchildren living locally to her in Northumberland.  \n\n\n\nRevd Alison Myers\n\n\n\nAlison came to Launde Abbey having been a Team Rector in rural ministry in Cambridgeshire.  She has crafted and led many reflective services and gatherings using spoken word\, music\, silence and creative prayer stations.  She is also an experienced workshop leader and mentor\, combining spirituality and theology with the practical challenges of leadership\, team-working and managing change\, informed by her working life before she was ordained as well as theological study and lifelong faith.  Alison loves praying outdoors\, a good cup of coffee\, noticing the cycle of the seasons and encouraging a wondering faith. She lives with her family on-site at Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\nRevd Chris Webb\n\n\n\nChris Webb is an Anglican priest\, author\, speaker and teacher dedicated to helping people experience a richer walk with God by growing in prayer and the spiritual life. He has ministered in a wide variety of contexts: as president of Renovaré\, a spiritual formation ministry in the USA; as parish priest in Welsh farming communities and steelworking towns; and even in a church for the homeless. Chris is the author of two books: The Fire of the Word (2011) and God-Soaked Life (2017). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) or £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 28th July 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Stepping Into the Bible
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor many people\, including Christians\, the Bible is a bit of a closed book; this retreat opens it up. We step into the world of the Bible where we discover an evolving story in which people struggle with the same questions as we do\, and where old ideas are discarded and are replaced by new. We see how the Old and New Testaments relate to one another\, and as we move from the old to the new we see how ideas about God and Jesus\, salvation and morality changed over the centuries. We are led on a journey of faith that helps us get on to God’s wavelength; we discover that Christian faith is more than a set of beliefs about God\, prayer and getting to heaven. It is very much about the way we live our lives\, here and now\, so that God’s will is done and God’s kingdom comes on earth as in heaven. \n\n\n\nIt’s from the old I travel to the new \n\n\n\nkeep me travelling along with you. \n\n\n\nCanon Peter Sills: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe retreat will be led by Canon Dr Peter Sills. After an initial career teaching Law at Kingston\, Peter served in three parishes in the Diocese of Southwark before moving to Ely where he was Vice-Dean of the Cathedral. Peter is an engaging spiritual teacher and pilgrimage guide. He has led courses and retreats for churches and groups in the UK\, USA and at the Anglican Centre in Rome; this retreat is based on his recent book Six Steps Into The Bible. www.peter-sills.co.uk \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 11th August 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Look at the Birds: A Birdwatching Retreat
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re delighted to welcome Reverend Dale Hanson to lead this year’s birdwatching retreat at Launde Abbey. Dale regularly co-leads Even Sparrows retreats with Mark Winter on Holy Island and at Kilmalieu\, and brings with him many years of ministry experience\, a deep Christian faith\, and a lifelong passion for birdwatching and wildlife photography. He is always happy to offer practical guidance to those wanting to learn more about observing and photographing birds. \n\n\n\nWe’re gutted that Mark won’t be with us this November due to prior commitments – we’ll miss him hugely. But we’re also incredibly thankful and delighted that Dale is stepping in to lead the retreat. With Dale’s experience\, passion and love of birds\, we know it will be a truly special time. \n\n\n\nNow in its fifth year\, the Launde birdwatching retreat has become a much-loved event. Each retreat reveals how many birds can be seen\, heard and learned from in the local area – last year’s impressive total of 76 species included Osprey\, Hobby\, Cuckoo\, Lesser Whitethroat and Garden Warbler. \n\n\n\nCome and see these birds for yourself\, and enjoy a time of quiet Celtic Christian worship\, biblical reflection and guided birdwatching walks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReverend Dale Hanson is a recently retired Anglican priest\, having served in ministry for nearly 40 years. His vocation has taken him across the UK and internationally\, including two periods in Hong Kong\, time in France\, and most recently to the Falkland Islands\, where he served as locum chaplain at Port Stanley Cathedral. Dale is well known in the North East from his time as vicar of St Nicholas Church in Durham – often called “the church in the marketplace.” He now regularly co-leads Even Sparrows retreats with Mark on Holy Island and at Kilmalieu. SUMMARY:Meditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat ***2 SPACEs LEFT***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat\, led by Chris Whittington\, founder of the School of Contemplative Life. \n\n\n\nWith astonishing wisdom\, originality and directness\, Meister Eckhart invites us to let go of all our conceptions of God and enter the groundless ground in which we are one with God and all creation. \n\n\n\nWhy? To manifest this oneness in a life of love and compassion. For Eckhart\, the spiritual life is inseparable from the ethical life. \n\n\n\n“If a person were in an ecstasy as St Paul was\, and if they knew of a sick person who needed a bowl of soup from them\, I would consider it far better if you were to leave that rapture out of love and help the needy person out of greater love.”  \n\n\n\nRecognised today as one of the greatest mystics of the Western Christian tradition\, Eckhart has much to say which can help us greatly in meeting many pressing contemporary issues. \n\n\n\nEckhart had a profound sense of the equality of all human beings\, and despite living within a male-dominated Church and society\, he was deeply influenced by women. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to the urgent need to protect our planet\, Eckhart had a profound sense of the essential goodness of creation\, that each of us and every created thing bears witness to the invisible source of all life. \n\n\n\n“Someone who knows nothing but creatures would never need to attend to any sermons\, for every creature is full of God and is a book.” \n\n\n\nFor Eckhart\, God is the ever-present ground of all creation\, the oneness in which “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). \n\n\n\nThe extraordinary gift of his teaching\, is how it can help us cultivate awareness of this oneness\, so that we\, like him\, might come to see God in all things and all things in God. \n\n\n\nThrough a flow of talks\, extended meditation practice and conversation\, we will explore the teaching of Meister Eckhart\, focusing in particular on: \n\n\n\n\nReleasing into the oneness of God\n\n\n\nHow a spiritual life is inseparable from an ethical life\n\n\n\nRadical equality\n\n\n\nParallels in the teaching of Meister Eckhart and Buddhism\n\n\n\nHow awareness of oneness is the deepest basis for compassion and justice\, for our care of each other and of our precious world.\n\n\n\n\n—————- \n\n\n\nThe retreat has been carefully crafted to be relevant and accessible to anyone searching for truth and peace\, regardless of their faith\, beliefs or previous experience of meditation. \n\n\n\nA detailed timetable for the retreat will be sent to everyone attending. The retreat starts on Friday at 4:30 pm with an orientation talk\, followed by a period of silent meditation before dinner. Short talks across the weekend will be balanced with periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, time for private reflection and enjoyment of the beautiful grounds. The retreat will finish after lunch and a closing conversation on Sunday. \n\n\n\nEarly morning practice \n\n\n\nSaturday and Sunday begin at 6:30 am with meditation practice. Early morning meditation is a wonderful way to greet the day together. While we very much encourage everyone to attend this session\, if this is difficult for you for any reason\, please don’t worry. It is always enough to do what we can – or what our life allows. \n\n\n\nSmall Reflection Groups \n\n\n\nSmall reflection groups\, hosted by Chris\, provide an opportunity for up to seven people to meet and explore together a question or two about their meditation practice\, or how practice relates to what they have heard during a talk or to daily life. We can learn so much by sharing with and listening to others. \n\n\n\n———- \n\n\n\nBeing on retreat is a precious opportunity to be still\, to be silent\, to practice living simply and peacefully and cultivate the gift of loving-awareness as we devote ourselves to the depth-dimension of faith and life. \n\n\n\nThe focus of the retreat is silent meditation practice and we will practice bringing loving-awareness to all our daily activities – while sitting\, while walking or eating\, when we are simply enjoying a glass of water. We will practice living each moment deeply. \n\n\n\nThe practice of silence will commence when the retreat begins at 16:30 on the Friday and continue until after lunch on the Sunday. \n\n\n\nAlthough the practice of silence may be new to some\, most people find this a powerful and wonderful experience. Maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment – walking\, moving\, and doing things quietly – is important for our practice and a gift we can offer to each other. \n\n\n\nThe last session of each day will be an opportunity for conversation together\, to reflect on the content of the talks and what we have experienced in our meditation through the day. \n\n\n\nThe retreat timetable includes periods of private practice time for sitting and walking meditation. Some people find it helpful to bring a craft activity to accompany times of private sitting meditation. If you decide to do this\, the craft should be very simple and not likely to stimulate thoughts. The Desert Fathers and Mothers were famous for weaving baskets! \n\n\n\nYou may wish to bring warm\, comfy clothes and a waterproof jacket/umbrella for walking meditation in the event of inclement weather. A notepad and pen will also be useful. \n\n\n\nRetreat Leader \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Whittington is the Founder of The School of Contemplative Life. He was introduced to contemplative practice during several years of formation when he lived at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey. Chris’ monastic teachers\, including Sylvester Houedard OSB\, taught meditation as a universal wisdom found within all the great spiritual traditions\, a pathway to peace and solidarity with people of all faiths and none. Following an introduction by the Abbot of the Prinknash community\, Chris subsequently studied at the Dalai Lama’s monastery in Dharamshala\, India. Chris regularly delivers talks\, workshops and retreats and has introduced the practice of meditation in the Christian tradition to thousands of people in the UK and abroad. \n\n\n\nFor information about the School of Contemplative Life\, please visit: www.schoolofcontemplativelife.com OR https://www.youtube.com/@schoolofcontemplativelife  \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £350 (standard room) or £380 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £330 (standard room) or £360 (character room) if booked by 5th September 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. SUMMARY:The Journey into Oneness: Meditation and the Wisdom of the Cloud of Unknowing - A Weekend Silent Retreat **1 SPACE AVAILABLE**
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Weekend Silent Retreat \n\n\n\n‘God is your being.’  So says the anonymous medieval author of The Cloud of Unknowing and The Book of Privy Counselling. We are already one with God\, with each other and all creation in God. \n\n\n\nHow might meditation help us to become aware of this oneness? And how might this awareness transform our lives and relationships?  \n\n\n\nThe Cloud of Unknowing and The Book of Privy (‘private’) Counselling are among the most important texts on meditation in the Christian tradition. Originally written as practical guides for his student\, the author teaches with a blend of wisdom and simplicity\, directness and humour that reaches across the centuries. \n\n\n\nThrough a flow of talks\, silent meditation practice and opportunities for conversation\, we’ll explore: \n\n\n\n\nthe simple guidelines for meditation practice as described in The Cloud;\n\n\n\nwhat the author says in The Book of Privy Counselling about the practice of resting in awareness\, the realisation of oneness\, and how our practice can benefit the whole of creation.\n\n\n\n\nThe Cloud author sees meditation as a path of integration\, of liberation and harmony\, which contributes not only to the well-being of the practitioner\, but to the well-being of all people\, of the entire universe.  \n\n\n\nUltimately\, meditation ‘is nothing else but the glorious gift of love’ he says\, a ‘work of love’ which illuminates the heart and makes our ‘relationships with others beautiful’. To the one who is content to enter the mystery of God’s infinite love\, ‘all people seem family to them\, and none seem a stranger.’ \n\n\n\nIt is enough to simply lift up our hearts ‘with a humble stirring of love\,’ says the author.  No thoughts are needed. ‘Let God be God’ without trying to dress God up in your favourite God-clothes. Allow yourself to come to God ‘just as you are…’  \n\n\n\nFor those who would like to do some pre-reading for the retreat\, two chapters in Chris Whittington’s book The Missing Peace feature new translations from these classic texts: Chapter 9\, ‘Enter Into Your Inner Room’\, and Chapter 35\, ‘Resting in Awareness’. \n\n\n\nWho is this for? \n\n\n\nThis retreat will offer important insights for those who practice meditation\, but is also intended for those who are new to the practice and feel drawn to discover the deep wisdom of the Christian contemplative tradition. It has been carefully crafted to be accessible to anyone searching for truth and peace\, regardless of their faith or beliefs. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect \n\n\n\nBeing on retreat is a precious opportunity to be still\, to be silent\, to practice living simply and peacefully and cultivate the gift of loving-awareness as we devote ourselves to the depth dimension of faith and life. \n\n\n\nThe focus of the retreat is silent meditation practice\, and we will practice bringing loving-awareness to all our daily activities – while sitting\, while walking or eating\, when we are simply enjoying a glass of water. We will practice living each moment deeply. \n\n\n\nThe practice of silence will commence when the retreat begins on Friday and continue until after lunch on Sunday. Although the practice of silence may be new to some\, most people find this a powerful and wonderful experience. Maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment – walking\, moving\, and doing things quietly – is important for our practice and a gift we can offer to each other. \n\n\n\nThe last session of each day will be an opportunity for conversation together\, to reflect on the content of the talks and what we have experienced in our meditation throughout the day. \n\n\n\nPractical information \n\n\n\nA detailed timetable for the retreat will be sent to everyone attending a week or two before it begins (or is available on request sooner). The retreat starts on Friday at 4:30 pm with an orientation talk\, followed by a period of silent meditation before dinner. Short talks across the weekend will be balanced with periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, time for private reflection and enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings. The retreat will finish at 3:00 pm after lunch and a closing conversation on Sunday. \n\n\n\nSaturday and Sunday begin at 6:30 am with meditation practice. Early morning meditation is a wonderful way to greet the day together. While we very much encourage everyone to attend this session\, if this is difficult for you for any reason\, please don’t worry. It is always enough to do what we can – or what our life allows. \n\n\n\nSmall reflection groups\, hosted by Chris\, provide an opportunity for up to seven people to meet and explore together a question or two about their meditation practice\, or how practice relates to what they have heard during a talk or to daily life. We can learn so much by sharing with and listening to others. \n\n\n\nEvent leader \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Whittington is the Founder of The School of Contemplative Life. He was introduced to contemplative practice during several years of formation when he lived at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey in England. Chris’ monastic teachers taught meditation as a universal wisdom found within all the great spiritual traditions\, a pathway to peace and solidarity with people of all faiths and none. Following an introduction by the Abbot of the Prinknash community\, Chris subsequently studied at the Dalai Lama’s monastery in Dharamshala\, India. \n\n\n\nChris regularly delivers talks\, workshops and retreats and has introduced the practice of meditation in the Christian tradition to thousands of people in the UK and abroad. He is known for his ability to communicate the subtleties of the practice and complex spiritual texts in simple\, practical ways\, resonant with the challenges of daily life. \n\n\n\nChris is the author of The Missing Peace | Meditation as a Spiritual Path to Peace\, Community and Oneness published by Canterbury Press in the Autumn. \n\n\n\nTestimonials \n\n\n\n“From start to finish\, the retreat was incredible.  The schedule was ideal: a mix of lectures\, meditation\, silent meals and private practice. This was my first experience of The School of Contemplative Life and I drove 9 hours on a gut instinct to attend. It was worth every minute. Chris is an attentive and insightful teacher; clearly with a wealth of knowledge.  This is the kind of teaching I have been searching for! Thank you for making it possible. I feel relieved and excited to have landed on a path I can trust. I know I can learn\, develop and grow under such guidance. Post-retreat\, I feel a sense of inner peace and calm that is new.. a wonderful beginning.” \n\n\n\n“The content was extraordinary and life-changing\, not to be dramatic! I was already a (newish) meditator but the extra sitting meditations\, the walking meditations in your beautiful grounds\, in the quiet company of others\, was very special. Chris is a wonderful teacher\, speaking with precision and clarity about the simple (yet deep) truths of who we really are.  I felt the presence of God more clearly than perhaps I ever have done and know that in some way I am changed\, even now I’m back home.” \n\n\n\n“There is so much that I valued about this retreat and so many things I will be taking forward: being given the opportunity to practise meditation multiple times through the day\, the teaching\, the peace\, the fellowship with others\, learning to train my mind.” \n\n\n\nThe School of Contemplative Life events should be understood as only providing spiritual guidance and advice to help participants deepen their own meditation practice and understanding. Many people have experienced improvements in general wellbeing through meditation practice. However\, if you suffer from any mental\, emotional or physical health conditions\, please ask your medical practitioner if it is advisable for you to attend an event with us\, make sure you always follow your medical practitioner’s advice and let us know in general terms without sharing specific details. \n\n\n\nEARLY BIRD RATE: £350 (standard room) or £380 (character room) if booked by 16th January 2026! Retreat price: £370 (standard room) or £400 (character room)  \n\n\n\nPrice includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. SUMMARY:Labyrinth Retreat
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe labyrinth is an ancient symbol\, dating back over 4\,000 years and appearing in many different countries\, cultures and faith traditions. It has been used for centuries as a tool for prayer and meditation. Today\, amidst the pressures and uncertainty of modern life\, people are once again finding themselves drawn to the labyrinth. Walking the winding path of a labyrinth helps us to unwind and offers time and space for quiet reflection. It clears the mind\, relaxes the body\, and opens the heart\, allowing us to respond from the deepest part of ourselves that knows wisdom.  \n\n\n\nDuring our time together\, we will learn more about the fascinating history of labyrinths\, their symbolism\, spirituality and the many ways in which they are being used today. We will walk the labyrinth (both indoors and outside in the garden) with different intentions each day\, and enjoy the tranquillity of a candlelit labyrinth walk after dark. There will be an opportunity to learn how to draw a finger labyrinth and to discover how finger labyrinths can be used in prayer.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNickie Fidgin is an experienced labyrinth facilitator and has been leading retreats and quiet days for many years. In 2015\, she set up the Peaceful Path Project to introduce schools to the labyrinth as a tool for exploring spirituality and wellbeing.  Having originally trained as a nurse\, Nickie is passionate about helping people live in wellness. She also teaches Capacitar\, a body\, mind and spirit programme for trauma healing and wellbeing\, which includes the labyrinth. Nickie loves facilitating singing groups to lift the spirits and warm the heart!  \n\n\n\nEARLY BIRD RATE: £474 (standard room) or £519 (character room) if booked by 16th March 2026Retreat price: £504 (standard room) or £549 (character room)  \n\n\n\nPrice includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources.
