SUMMARY:Meditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat ***2 SPACEs LEFT***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat\, led by Chris Whittington\, founder of the School of Contemplative Life. \n\n\n\nWith astonishing wisdom\, originality and directness\, Meister Eckhart invites us to let go of all our conceptions of God and enter the groundless ground in which we are one with God and all creation. \n\n\n\nWhy? To manifest this oneness in a life of love and compassion. For Eckhart\, the spiritual life is inseparable from the ethical life. \n\n\n\n“If a person were in an ecstasy as St Paul was\, and if they knew of a sick person who needed a bowl of soup from them\, I would consider it far better if you were to leave that rapture out of love and help the needy person out of greater love.”  \n\n\n\nRecognised today as one of the greatest mystics of the Western Christian tradition\, Eckhart has much to say which can help us greatly in meeting many pressing contemporary issues. \n\n\n\nEckhart had a profound sense of the equality of all human beings\, and despite living within a male-dominated Church and society\, he was deeply influenced by women. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to the urgent need to protect our planet\, Eckhart had a profound sense of the essential goodness of creation\, that each of us and every created thing bears witness to the invisible source of all life. \n\n\n\n“Someone who knows nothing but creatures would never need to attend to any sermons\, for every creature is full of God and is a book.” \n\n\n\nFor Eckhart\, God is the ever-present ground of all creation\, the oneness in which “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). \n\n\n\nThe extraordinary gift of his teaching\, is how it can help us cultivate awareness of this oneness\, so that we\, like him\, might come to see God in all things and all things in God. \n\n\n\nThrough a flow of talks\, extended meditation practice and conversation\, we will explore the teaching of Meister Eckhart\, focusing in particular on: \n\n\n\n\nReleasing into the oneness of God\n\n\n\nHow a spiritual life is inseparable from an ethical life\n\n\n\nRadical equality\n\n\n\nParallels in the teaching of Meister Eckhart and Buddhism\n\n\n\nHow awareness of oneness is the deepest basis for compassion and justice\, for our care of each other and of our precious world.\n\n\n\n\n—————- \n\n\n\nThe retreat has been carefully crafted to be relevant and accessible to anyone searching for truth and peace\, regardless of their faith\, beliefs or previous experience of meditation. \n\n\n\nA detailed timetable for the retreat will be sent to everyone attending. The retreat starts on Friday at 4:30 pm with an orientation talk\, followed by a period of silent meditation before dinner. Short talks across the weekend will be balanced with periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, time for private reflection and enjoyment of the beautiful grounds. The retreat will finish after lunch and a closing conversation on Sunday. \n\n\n\nEarly morning practice \n\n\n\nSaturday and Sunday begin at 6:30 am with meditation practice. Early morning meditation is a wonderful way to greet the day together. While we very much encourage everyone to attend this session\, if this is difficult for you for any reason\, please don’t worry. It is always enough to do what we can – or what our life allows. \n\n\n\nSmall Reflection Groups \n\n\n\nSmall reflection groups\, hosted by Chris\, provide an opportunity for up to seven people to meet and explore together a question or two about their meditation practice\, or how practice relates to what they have heard during a talk or to daily life. We can learn so much by sharing with and listening to others. \n\n\n\n———- \n\n\n\nBeing on retreat is a precious opportunity to be still\, to be silent\, to practice living simply and peacefully and cultivate the gift of loving-awareness as we devote ourselves to the depth-dimension of faith and life. \n\n\n\nThe focus of the retreat is silent meditation practice and we will practice bringing loving-awareness to all our daily activities – while sitting\, while walking or eating\, when we are simply enjoying a glass of water. We will practice living each moment deeply. \n\n\n\nThe practice of silence will commence when the retreat begins at 16:30 on the Friday and continue until after lunch on the Sunday. \n\n\n\nAlthough the practice of silence may be new to some\, most people find this a powerful and wonderful experience. Maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment – walking\, moving\, and doing things quietly – is important for our practice and a gift we can offer to each other. \n\n\n\nThe last session of each day will be an opportunity for conversation together\, to reflect on the content of the talks and what we have experienced in our meditation through the day. \n\n\n\nThe retreat timetable includes periods of private practice time for sitting and walking meditation. Some people find it helpful to bring a craft activity to accompany times of private sitting meditation. If you decide to do this\, the craft should be very simple and not likely to stimulate thoughts. The Desert Fathers and Mothers were famous for weaving baskets! \n\n\n\nYou may wish to bring warm\, comfy clothes and a waterproof jacket/umbrella for walking meditation in the event of inclement weather. A notepad and pen will also be useful. \n\n\n\nRetreat Leader \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Whittington is the Founder of The School of Contemplative Life. He was introduced to contemplative practice during several years of formation when he lived at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey. Chris’ monastic teachers\, including Sylvester Houedard OSB\, taught meditation as a universal wisdom found within all the great spiritual traditions\, a pathway to peace and solidarity with people of all faiths and none. Following an introduction by the Abbot of the Prinknash community\, Chris subsequently studied at the Dalai Lama’s monastery in Dharamshala\, India. Chris regularly delivers talks\, workshops and retreats and has introduced the practice of meditation in the Christian tradition to thousands of people in the UK and abroad. \n\n\n\nFor information about the School of Contemplative Life\, please visit: www.schoolofcontemplativelife.com OR https://www.youtube.com/@schoolofcontemplativelife  \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £350 (standard room) or £380 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £330 (standard room) or £360 (character room) if booked by 5th September 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. Dale regularly co-leads Even Sparrows retreats with Mark Winter on Holy Island and at Kilmalieu\, and brings with him many years of ministry experience\, a deep Christian faith\, and a lifelong passion for birdwatching and wildlife photography. He is always happy to offer practical guidance to those wanting to learn more about observing and photographing birds. \n\n\n\nWe’re gutted that Mark won’t be with us this November due to prior commitments – we’ll miss him hugely. But we’re also incredibly thankful and delighted that Dale is stepping in to lead the retreat. With Dale’s experience\, passion and love of birds\, we know it will be a truly special time. \n\n\n\nNow in its fifth year\, the Launde birdwatching retreat has become a much-loved event. Each retreat reveals how many birds can be seen\, heard and learned from in the local area – last year’s impressive total of 76 species included Osprey\, Hobby\, Cuckoo\, Lesser Whitethroat and Garden Warbler. \n\n\n\nCome and see these birds for yourself\, and enjoy a time of quiet Celtic Christian worship\, biblical reflection and guided birdwatching walks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReverend Dale Hanson is a recently retired Anglican priest\, having served in ministry for nearly 40 years. SUMMARY:Stepping Into the Bible
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor many people\, including Christians\, the Bible is a bit of a closed book; this retreat opens it up. We step into the world of the Bible where we discover an evolving story in which people struggle with the same questions as we do\, and where old ideas are discarded and are replaced by new. We see how the Old and New Testaments relate to one another\, and as we move from the old to the new we see how ideas about God and Jesus\, salvation and morality changed over the centuries. We are led on a journey of faith that helps us get on to God’s wavelength; we discover that Christian faith is more than a set of beliefs about God\, prayer and getting to heaven. It is very much about the way we live our lives\, here and now\, so that God’s will is done and God’s kingdom comes on earth as in heaven. \n\n\n\nIt’s from the old I travel to the new \n\n\n\nkeep me travelling along with you. \n\n\n\nCanon Peter Sills: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe retreat will be led by Canon Dr Peter Sills. After an initial career teaching Law at Kingston\, Peter served in three parishes in the Diocese of Southwark before moving to Ely where he was Vice-Dean of the Cathedral. Peter is an engaging spiritual teacher and pilgrimage guide. He has led courses and retreats for churches and groups in the UK\, USA and at the Anglican Centre in Rome; this retreat is based on his recent book Six Steps Into The Bible. www.peter-sills.co.uk \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 11th August 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Rooted and Grounded: Going Deeper Into Spiritual Practice ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Rooted and Grounded: Going Deeper Into Spiritual Practice. \n\n\n\nA retreat hosted jointly by Renovaré Britain & Ireland (renovare.org.uk) and the Launde Abbey community (laundeabbey.org.uk)  \n\n\n\nPaul shared with the Ephesians his yearning “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith as you are being rooted and grounded in love“ (Ephesians 3.17). Do you want to develop those same deeper spiritual roots? Would you like to be able to cultivate a listening heart? Do you long to be transformed to become more like Christ?  \n\n\n\nRooted and Grounded is a retreat for those who want to tap into the rich wisdom and experience of the various Christian spiritual traditions: contemplative and charismatic\, catholic and evangelical\, political and personal. We’ll take time to find rest and refreshment in prayer\, worship\, silence and rest. And we’ll explore a wide range of spiritual practices you can take away with you to deepen your life of faith. You might want to be more resilient in the face of exhausting demands. You might be looking for a deeper foundation for your ministry. You might be wrestling with the question: how do I live a flourishing life? If so\, this retreat is for you.  \n\n\n\nThe team for this retreat is the Revd Roy Searle\, the Revd Rachel Hudson\, the Revd Alison Myers\, and the Revd Chris Webb.   \n\n\n\nRevd Roy Searle\n\n\n\nRoy is a Companion and one of the founders of the Northumbria Community. He has served as a past President of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and is a founding member of Renovare Britain and Ireland. A popular conference speaker\, writer\, retreat leader\, pioneer mentor and spiritual director\, Roy is passionate about encouraging people to love God\, listen well\, think deeply\, and live authentically and generously. He is an associate with the Northumbrian collective and The Commons Cooperative. He is married to Shirley and lives in their beloved Northumberland. They have four children and eight grandchildren. \n\n\n\nRachel Hudson\n\n\n\nRachel Hudson has a background in teaching and youth work which led towards psychotherapy as a second career. She has worked in that field for 25 years\, specialising in work with church ministers of all denominations and in trauma practice. She has led retreats for over 20 years\, usually creative\, active and biblically based\, developing aspects of the spiritual formation Renovare is committed to. Ordained as an Anglican minister late in life ( a third career!) she served for 7 years before retirement and is now enjoying new developments in pastoral supervision and retreats. She still offers training\, and has written material for new books\, alongside being a contributor to Daily Bread Bible reading notes. Rachel is an adoptive parent to 2 adult children with 3 grandchildren living locally to her in Northumberland.  \n\n\n\nRevd Alison Myers\n\n\n\nAlison came to Launde Abbey having been a Team Rector in rural ministry in Cambridgeshire.  She has crafted and led many reflective services and gatherings using spoken word\, music\, silence and creative prayer stations.  She is also an experienced workshop leader and mentor\, combining spirituality and theology with the practical challenges of leadership\, team-working and managing change\, informed by her working life before she was ordained as well as theological study and lifelong faith.  Alison loves praying outdoors\, a good cup of coffee\, noticing the cycle of the seasons and encouraging a wondering faith. She lives with her family on-site at Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\nRevd Chris Webb\n\n\n\nChris Webb is an Anglican priest\, author\, speaker and teacher dedicated to helping people experience a richer walk with God by growing in prayer and the spiritual life. SUMMARY:The Practice of Joy: CS Lewis Retreat ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn this Creationtide retreat\, we explore the topic of joy with C S Lewis\, author of the Narnia Chronicles (nature was one of the chief mediums through which joy came to him). We will explore the different aspects of the subject that he so delights in; finding joy in creation\, discovering how we can share the joy\, learning about different modes and manifestations of joy\, anticipating the joy of heaven\, and working out how joy could become our daily ‘practice’.  In his autobiography\, based around the concept of joy\, Lewis said ‘In a sense the central story of my life is about nothing else’. \n\n\n\nThis is a retreat for the refreshment of the spirit as Andy Swinford leads us on a deep dive into the joy-filled life and writings of C S Lewis (no prior knowledge needed!). The wind of joy breathes through both his stories and non-fiction and we will draw close to God by using the insights they provide as jumping-off points for our own experiences of joyous wonder. There will be space for reflection\, walking\, prayer\, and enjoying God’s wonderful creation in the beautiful grounds and surroundings of Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAndy Swinford delivers multimedia presentations and online classes about C S Lewis\, as well as leading retreats on the spiritual enrichment to be gained from the writings of the two friends Lewis and Tolkien. He is the author of ‘The Practice of Joy: insights from the stories of C S Lewis’ (Grove) and a contributor to ‘The Christian Tradition in English Literature’ (Zondervan). He lives in Birmingham and is a former teacher of English Literature. Since retiring from teaching beekeeping has become one of his chief joys. \n\n\n\n Retreat price: £495 (standard room) or £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 23rd June 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Contemplative Photography Retreat: The Space Between 間
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a Photography and Spirituality retreat based around the premise that the photographer’s stance is a way of slowing down and being attentive to the world (as God’s sacred text) around and God’s presence and proclamation within it. Cameras or camera phones will be useful\, but not essential. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMorna is Vicar of Finedon and Assistant Vocations Officer in the Diocese of Peterborough. She has significant experience in teaching and facilitating learning\, as well as leading retreats\, and is currently training to be a Spiritual Director. SUMMARY:Into the Silent Land: Five-Day Meditation Retreat ***2 PLACES REMAINING***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDue to high demand\, we are delighted to announce that we will be running this retreat again… \n\n\n\nInto The Silent Land: A Five-Day Meditation Retreat – 14th – 18th July 2025 \n\n\n\n“We are built for contemplation… Communion with God in the silence of the heart is a God-given capacity\, like the rhododendron’s capacity to flower\, the fledglings for flight\, and the child’s for self-forgetful abandon and joy.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith these words\, Martin Laird begins his classic book Into the Silent Land: The Practice of Contemplation – widely recognised as one of the best introductions to meditation in the Christian tradition written in generations. He brings together an engaging introduction to the Christian contemplative tradition for people inside or on the margins of the churches who feel drawn to the world of silent prayer. \n\n\n\nMartin Laird shows how silence and meditation can offer a remedy to many contemporary dilemmas and emotional struggles. Writing with great clarity\, poetic depth and authority\, Laird examines central meditative methods and traditions found within contemplative prayer. Exploring the role of breath in the spiritual life and the nature of awareness – so often associated in the minds of many with other spiritual traditions – he shows that this is also an ancient concern of Christian thinkers. \n\n\n\nInto the Silent Land offers profound insights for the student of silent prayer but is especially intended for the non-specialist who feels drawn to discover the deep wisdom of the Christian contemplative tradition. \n\n\n\nRetreat focus \n\n\n\nHow do we enter the “Silent Land” of Divine presence? \n\n\n\n“By the silence of surrender\,” says Laird: “The contemplative discipline of meditation…is not a technique but a surrendering of deeply held resistances that allows the sacred within to gradually reveal itself as a simple\, fundamental fact.”   \n\n\n\n“The more we realise we are one with God the more we become ourselves\, just as we are\, just as we were created to be. The Creator is outpouring love\, the creation\, the love outpoured.” \n\n\n\nIn this unique experiential retreat\, we will explore the essential skills and wisdom of the art of meditation as set out in ‘Into the Silent Land’\, including: \n\n\n\n\ncultivating gentle concentration (attentiveness) and the opening of awareness\n\n\n\nthe subtle challenges of stilling the mind and the interior skills to meet them\n\n\n\nhow our deepening silence reveals “the overflowing vastness” of our deepest identity in God\n\n\n\nbecoming windows of light and places of peace for the world\n\n\n\n\nThe retreat has been carefully crafted to be relevant and accessible to anyone searching for truth and peace\, regardless of their faith\, beliefs or previous experience of meditation. \n\n\n\nWords of support from Martin Laird \n\n\n\n“The School of Contemplative Life will surely rate among the most significant responses to the spiritual longings of the people of this nation and abroad [and] directly nourish and cultivate the depth-dimension of life through its well thought out programme of retreats\, guidance and other opportunities\, to the wellspring of silence and compassion flowing within.” \n\n\n\nSchedule \n\n\n\nA detailed timetable for the retreat will be sent to everyone attending. The retreat will start at 14:00 on the Monday and finish and 15:00 on the Friday and involve extended periods of meditation practice and silence. Each full day of the retreat will include: \n\n\n\n\n06:30 Sitting meditation & walking meditation\n\n\n\n08:00 Holy Communion (for those who wish to attend)\n\n\n\n09:00 Talk and sitting meditation\n\n\n\n10:30 Private practice time or small reflection groups\n\n\n\n12:30 Sitting meditation\n\n\n\n14:00 Private practice time or reflection groups\n\n\n\n17:00 Talk and sitting meditation\n\n\n\n19:30 Sitting meditation\n\n\n\n20:00 Group conversation\n\n\n\n\nEarly morning practice is a wonderful way to greet the day together. While we very much encourage everyone to attend the 6:30am practice session\, if this is difficult for you for any reason please don’t worry. It is always enough to do what we can – or what our life allows. \n\n\n\nOne-to-one spiritual counsel meetings are not counselling or coaching\, but provide a dedicated opportunity for someone to explore a question or two about their meditation practice\, or how practice relates to what they have heard during a talk or to daily life. Lasting approximately 15 minutes\, meetings are deliberately short to provide focus. \n\n\n\nAttending a silent retreat \n\n\n\nBeing on retreat is a precious opportunity to be still\, to be silent\, to practice living simply and peacefully and cultivate the gift of loving-awareness as we devote ourselves to the depth-dimension of faith and life. \n\n\n\nThe focus of the retreat is silent meditation practice and we will practice bringing loving-awareness to all our daily activities – while sitting\, while walking or eating\, when we are simply enjoying a glass of water. We will practice living each moment deeply. \n\n\n\nThe practice of silence will commence when the retreat begins at 14:00 on the Monday and continue until lunchtime on the Friday. Although the practice of silence may be new to some\, most people find this a powerful and wonderful experience. Maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment – walking\, moving\, and doing things quietly – is important for our practice and a gift we can offer to each other. \n\n\n\nFor information about the School of Contemplative Life\, please visit: www.schoolofcontemplativelife.com OR https://www.youtube.com/@schoolofcontemplativelife  \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £620 (standard room) or £680 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £580 (standard room) or £640 (character room) if booked by 5th May 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Adrift in Delight: A Contemplative Intensive
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re offering this retreat at a reduced price due to short notice. Led by Revd Chris Webb. \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this retreat is to provide those who practice contemplation the time and space to deepen their practice (whether centring prayer\, Christian meditation\, mindfulness or some other approach). \n\n\n\nBy sitting together in supportive\, contemplative silence at intervals throughout the course of the day\, we will deepen our contemplative practice by immersing ourselves gently but generously into it together. We’ll provide space within us and among us to allow the silence of God to expand across the landscape of our hearts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a series of short conferences\, we will reflect on how the great contemplative tradition speaks into our present experience\, helping to shape and deepen our contemplative practice. Drawing on the Desert Christians\, the Cloud of Unknowing\, Julian of Norwich\, John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila\, we’ll explore the inner noise that draws us away from our true selves\, the gentle reshaping of our intentions\, the problems of discouragement and darkness\, the awareness of Christ already within us\, and more. \n\n\n\nChris Webb\, Deputy Warden of Launde Abbey\, is an Anglican priest who has ministered as president of a spiritual formation ministry in the USA\, as a parish priest in Wales and in a church for the homeless. He is the author of two books: The Fire of the Word (2011) and God-Soaked Life (2017). \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £240 (standard room) or £270 (character room) with the option to have a pre-retreat stay on the Sunday night for an extra £95.00 (inclusive of lunch on the Monday before the retreat starts). \n\n\n\nPrice includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. SUMMARY:Thriving In Retirement
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis retreat is tailored for those approaching retirement\, as well as those already retired. \n\n\n\nJesus didn’t use the word ‘retirement’ and the period sometimes called ‘the third age’ can seem at the same time both attractive and scary. This overnight retreat\, led by Florence and Clive Morton\, is for those at any stage who want to think about life in this ‘third age’\, beyond paid employment or ministry. It is open to all. \n\n\n\nThe retreat will be using short talks\, prayers\, time for reflection\, music\, poetry and prose\, and simple acts of worship. There will be the opportunity for a short individual conversation with one of the leaders if you wish. \n\n\n\nFlorence taught English in a Scottish comprehensive school in the 1970s and 80s and then worked in the Voluntary sector for a decade. In 2001 she had a couple of strokes. After recovering\, she trained as a spiritual director. \n\n\n\nClive is a Professor Emeritus at Middlesex University and Canon Emeritus at Peterborough Cathedral. He is also a trustee of Cambridgeshire Workplace Chaplaincy. He is a civil engineer and holds a PhD in industrial relations from the London School of Economics and was appointed OBE for his contribution to business and the community in 1992. Clive and Florence also ran Umbrian Retreats for 12 years and they describe themselves as Anglo-Baptists. \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £185 (standard room) or £200 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £175 (standard room) or £190 (character room) if booked by Saturday 19th April 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. SUMMARY:Contemplative and Charismatic: A Rooted and Grounded Retreat
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContemplative and Charismatic: A Rooted and Grounded Retreat \n\n\n\nA retreat hosted jointly by Renovaré Britain & Ireland (renovare.org.uk) and the Launde Abbey community (laundeabbey.org.uk)  \n\n\n\nContemplative and charismatic churches look\, on the surface\, to be poles apart: one tradition emphasises silence and reflection\, the other leans more into energetic worship and spiritual gifts. But at heart they both emphasise an intimate\, direct relationship with God through the Spirit. They’re like two very different streams flowing into a shared lake. \n\n\n\nIn this Rooted and Grounded retreat we’ll be taking time to explore these two streams in depth. As always\, we’ll tap into the rich wisdom and experience of a wide variety of thinkers and practitioners\, past and present. We’ll take time to find rest and refreshment in prayer\, worship\, silence and rest. And we’ll explore a wide range of spiritual practices you can take away with you to deepen your life of faith. \n\n\n\nThis retreat is open to anyone who wishes to participate\, but it does assume you have a good understanding of the Renovaré teaching about spiritual formation — either through taking part in a previous Rooted and Grounded retreat\, or in a similar Renovare event\, or from study of Richard Foster’s Streams of Living Water. If this material is new or unfamiliar\, why not consider coming on our next Rooted and Grounded retreat in October 2025? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoy is a Companion and one of the founders of the Northumbria Community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlison came to Launde Abbey having been a Team Rector in rural ministry in Cambridgeshire. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Webb is an Anglican priest\, author\, speaker and teacher dedicated to helping people experience a richer walk with God by growing in prayer and the spiritual life. He has ministered in a wide variety of contexts: as president of Renovaré\, a spiritual formation ministry in the USA; as parish priest in Welsh farming communities and steelworking towns; and even in a church for the homeless. Chris is the author of two books: The Fire of the Word (2011) and God-Soaked Life (2017). \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) or £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 13th April 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:The Sound of Musings
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpend an encouraging and inspiring retreat with Maria the ‘flibbertigibbet’ nun turned governess as she discovers the life she was born to live. The Sound of Musings Retreat is inspired by the much-loved\, iconic musical and offers profound and accessible insights into life\, love and faith. Prompted by the songs\, characters and stories in the film\, Bryony will lead us on our own journey of faith – it will be biblical\, authentic and quite a lot of fun. We will probably even make our own sounds of music too! \n\n\n\nIn 2025\, the iconic film The Sound of Music will celebrate 60 years since its release. Based on the excitement of previous film anniversaries\, this diamond anniversary will no doubt generate a lot of national and international interest\, making 2025 a great year to host a themed retreat. \n\n\n\n‘The Sound of Musings’ is a devotional book written by Bryony Wood\, published by Instant Apostle in May 2023 and is now offered as a themed retreat. \n\n\n\nSummary of the book – the ‘Blurb’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘The Sound of Musings deftly traces Maria von Trapp’s journey through the iconic film\, The Sound of Music. Dancing from scene to scene with the captivating and much-loved\, ‘flibbertigibbet’ nun turned governess\, author Bryony Wood draws out profound and accessible insights to encourage our own journey of faith. \n\n\n\nBryony holds true to the film’s spellbinding spirit and inspiring script. Prompted by the songs\, story\, and characters of the film\, each short chapter looks at different aspects of life\, love\, and faith to help us discover more about God’s love in our own lives. It’s inspiring\, biblically rooted\, honest and quite a lot of fun! \n\n\n\nSo\, as Maria would say\, let’s start at the very…(you know where!)’ \n\n\n\nAbout Bryony \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRevd Bryony Wood is a priest in the Church of England\, ‘Sound of Music theologian’\, speaker\, broadcaster and author of The Sound of Musings. \n\n\n\nShe served as a Vicar in Great Bowden (Market Harborough Group of churches 2017-2020)  so knows and loves the Leicestershire area. \n\n\n\nIt was at Launde Abbey that she was first inspired to develop a Sound of Music-themed Bible study- which then ‘evolved’ into the Sound of Musings book/bible study. \n\n\n\nSome kind words: \n\n\n\nJeff Lucas\, Author\, Speaker\, and Broadcaster says: \n\n\n\n“A brilliantly creative way to explore vital themes that emerge from a classic film\, Bryony’s writing is heartwarming\, winsome and encouraging. Buy the book and enjoy a delightful journey.” \n\n\n\n Rt Revd Martyn Snow Bishop of Leicester says: \n\n\n\n“I have many happy memories of watching the Sound of Music with my children – it became the soundtrack to several family holidays. So I encouraged Bryony to write her own “musings” as a fun way of helping others reflect on life\, faith and their “favourite things”. Bryony has a beautiful style of writing which will help anyone find God in the ordinary.”     \n\n\n\nRevd Canon Michael Mitton\, writer\, spiritual director\, speaker\, Canon Emeritus Derby Cathedral says: \n\n\n\n“Bryony’s inspiring work on this much-loved musical draws out beautiful insights into the many and varied themes contained in the Von Trapp story. Anyone viewing the film after reading this book will find they won’t just be watching a movie but will be embarking on an adventure with God!” \n\n\n\n Tony Horsfall\, author and retreat leader says: \n\n\n\n“In this joy-filled book\, Bryony has taken a familiar musical film and shown us how it speaks of God. Storylines and songs alike become windows to a deeper dimension\, carefully crafted and beautifully written. A book to inspire and uplift\, read it for yourself and buy it as a gift for someone special.” \n\n\n\n Revd Kate Bottley Broadcaster and Anglican Priest says: \n\n\n\n“Bryony writes with humour and warmth as well as insight. You’ll never be able to watch singing nuns in quite the same way.” \n\n\n\nFeedback from previous ‘The Sound of Musings’ retreats: \n\n\n\n“Bryony’s programme was brilliant – I really enjoyed how she linked scenes from the film with our Christian life.  In particular\, she has given me food for thought regarding my pastoral role in our church.” \n\n\n\n“Bryony’s talks were so encouraging – we should “live the life we were born to live” – be what God intends us to be.” \n\n\n\n“The friendliness and sharing and meeting people from different jobs and personalities.  The Sound of Musings – a wonderful experience.  If you do it again I will encourage people to come\, but for the above\, as well.” \n\n\n\nRetreat Price: £620 (standard room) or £680 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £580 (standard room) or £640 (character room) if booked by 24th March 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Look at the Birds: A Birdwatching Retreat **FULLY BOOKED**
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJesus told his followers to “look at the birds of the air” and Mark Winter as a keen birdwatcher has spent a lifetime following that teaching. Since 2004 Mark has helped others to look at birds   on his Even Sparrows retreats on Holy Island\, and he continues to marvel at how birds teach us about God’s love. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe welcome Mark back to Launde for the 5th year running to lead another birdwatching retreat. On each retreat people have discovered that we have so many birds locally to see\, hear and learn from; last year’s impressive total of 76 different species included Osprey\, Hobby\, Cuckoo\, Lesser Whitethroat and Garden Warbler. Come and see these birds for yourself and enjoy a time of quiet Celtic Christian worship\, biblical reflections and guided birdwatching walks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark’s book\, Look at the Birds of the Air\, brings to life the role of birds in the Bible. He explores their importance to individuals like Noah\, Moses and Elijah and their frequent mention in prophecy\, wisdom literature and the Psalms. Above all\, Mark considers the significance of birds like the raven\, eagle and dove to Jesus himself\, as well as the lessons we can learn from birds as his followers today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) or £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 11th February 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Holy Week with the Launde Abbey Community
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHoly Week at Launde Abbey: a retreat with the Launde community \n\n\n\nStay and pray as part of the Launde Abbey Community in Holy Week.  \n\n\n\nMonday 14 April MC — Sunday 20 April Lunch \n\n\n\n“Something strange is happening\,” wrote Epiphanus of Cyprus in the fifth century; “there is a great silence on earth today\, a great silence and stillness. Christ has gone to search for our first parent\, saying: Rise from the dead\, for I am the Life of the dead. Rise up\, work of my hands\, you who were created in my image. Rise\, let us leave this place\, for you are in me and I am in you; together we form only one person and we cannot be separated.” \n\n\n\nFor two millennia Christians have marked Holy Week by revisiting and reflecting on the momentous events of that ancient Passover: Jesus in the temple\, the upper room\, the garden\, at Calvary\, outside the opened tomb. During this year’s Holy Week\, the Launde community will be following Luke’s telling of the story through prayer\, worship\, reading\, meditation\, silence and song. And we’d love you to join us. \n\n\n\nWe’re inviting you to come for as much or as little of the week as you can: perhaps just a single day of quiet\, or two or three days of retreat\, or for the whole week. Every day there will be worship and prayer in the Chapel\, meals shared with members of the community\, opportunities for pastoral conversations with community members\, and plenty of time and space for silence and reflection. Some of the services will also be opened up to members of local rural churches to share our worship. \n\n\n\nOn Easter Sunday we’ll celebrate together at the start of the day and share breakfast; after that you’re welcome either to head home\, or to join one of our local churches and come back to us for a hearty Sunday lunch. \n\n\n\nThe week will be structured around our shared services (those marked with an asterisk* are open to local residents): \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday (14 April): Cleansing: A House of Prayer for All \n\n\n\nLuke 19.41—20.19 \n\n\n\nThe Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple (Mal 3.1) \n\n\n\n8am Morning Prayer; 12pm *Midday Eucharist; 5pm Evening Prayer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday (15 April): Controversy: The Wisdom of God \n\n\n\nLuke 20.20—21.4 \n\n\n\nThe stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone (Ps 118.22) \n\n\n\n8am Morning Prayer; 12pm *Midday Eucharist; 5pm Evening Prayer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday (16 April): Catastrophe: The Shape of Things to Come  \n\n\n\nLuke 21.5-38 \n\n\n\nThe time has come for the judgement to begin with the household of God (1 Pt 4.17) \n\n\n\n8am Morning Prayer; 12pm *Midday Eucharist; 5pm Evening Prayer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaundy Thursday (17 April): Communion: Drawn into the Heart of God \n\n\n\nLuke 22.1-23 \n\n\n\nI am the bread of life.
