SUMMARY:The Journey into Oneness: Meditation and the Wisdom of the Cloud of Unknowing - A Weekend Silent Retreat **1 SPACE AVAILABLE**
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Weekend Silent Retreat \n\n\n\n‘God is your being.’  So says the anonymous medieval author of The Cloud of Unknowing and The Book of Privy Counselling. We are already one with God\, with each other and all creation in God. \n\n\n\nHow might meditation help us to become aware of this oneness? And how might this awareness transform our lives and relationships?  \n\n\n\nThe Cloud of Unknowing and The Book of Privy (‘private’) Counselling are among the most important texts on meditation in the Christian tradition. Originally written as practical guides for his student\, the author teaches with a blend of wisdom and simplicity\, directness and humour that reaches across the centuries. \n\n\n\nThrough a flow of talks\, silent meditation practice and opportunities for conversation\, we’ll explore: \n\n\n\n\nthe simple guidelines for meditation practice as described in The Cloud;\n\n\n\nwhat the author says in The Book of Privy Counselling about the practice of resting in awareness\, the realisation of oneness\, and how our practice can benefit the whole of creation.\n\n\n\n\nThe Cloud author sees meditation as a path of integration\, of liberation and harmony\, which contributes not only to the well-being of the practitioner\, but to the well-being of all people\, of the entire universe.  \n\n\n\nUltimately\, meditation ‘is nothing else but the glorious gift of love’ he says\, a ‘work of love’ which illuminates the heart and makes our ‘relationships with others beautiful’. To the one who is content to enter the mystery of God’s infinite love\, ‘all people seem family to them\, and none seem a stranger.’ \n\n\n\nIt is enough to simply lift up our hearts ‘with a humble stirring of love\,’ says the author.  No thoughts are needed. ‘Let God be God’ without trying to dress God up in your favourite God-clothes. Allow yourself to come to God ‘just as you are…’  \n\n\n\nFor those who would like to do some pre-reading for the retreat\, two chapters in Chris Whittington’s book The Missing Peace feature new translations from these classic texts: Chapter 9\, ‘Enter Into Your Inner Room’\, and Chapter 35\, ‘Resting in Awareness’. \n\n\n\nWho is this for? \n\n\n\nThis retreat will offer important insights for those who practice meditation\, but is also intended for those who are new to the practice and feel drawn to discover the deep wisdom of the Christian contemplative tradition. It has been carefully crafted to be accessible to anyone searching for truth and peace\, regardless of their faith or beliefs. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect \n\n\n\nBeing on retreat is a precious opportunity to be still\, to be silent\, to practice living simply and peacefully and cultivate the gift of loving-awareness as we devote ourselves to the depth dimension of faith and life. \n\n\n\nThe focus of the retreat is silent meditation practice\, and we will practice bringing loving-awareness to all our daily activities – while sitting\, while walking or eating\, when we are simply enjoying a glass of water. We will practice living each moment deeply. \n\n\n\nThe practice of silence will commence when the retreat begins on Friday and continue until after lunch on Sunday. Although the practice of silence may be new to some\, most people find this a powerful and wonderful experience. Maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment – walking\, moving\, and doing things quietly – is important for our practice and a gift we can offer to each other. \n\n\n\nThe last session of each day will be an opportunity for conversation together\, to reflect on the content of the talks and what we have experienced in our meditation throughout the day. \n\n\n\nThe retreat timetable includes periods of private practice time for sitting and walking meditation. Some people find it helpful to bring a craft activity to accompany times of private sitting meditation. If you decide to do this\, the craft should be very simple and not likely to stimulate thoughts. The Desert Fathers and Mothers were famous for weaving baskets! \n\n\n\nPractical information \n\n\n\nA detailed timetable for the retreat will be sent to everyone attending a week or two before it begins (or is available on request sooner). The retreat starts on Friday at 4:30 pm with an orientation talk\, followed by a period of silent meditation before dinner. Short talks across the weekend will be balanced with periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, time for private reflection and enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings. The retreat will finish at 3:00 pm after lunch and a closing conversation on Sunday. \n\n\n\nSaturday and Sunday begin at 6:30 am with meditation practice. Early morning meditation is a wonderful way to greet the day together. While we very much encourage everyone to attend this session\, if this is difficult for you for any reason\, please don’t worry. It is always enough to do what we can – or what our life allows. \n\n\n\nSmall reflection groups\, hosted by Chris\, provide an opportunity for up to seven people to meet and explore together a question or two about their meditation practice\, or how practice relates to what they have heard during a talk or to daily life. We can learn so much by sharing with and listening to others. \n\n\n\nEvent leader \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Whittington is the Founder of The School of Contemplative Life. He was introduced to contemplative practice during several years of formation when he lived at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey in England. Chris’ monastic teachers taught meditation as a universal wisdom found within all the great spiritual traditions\, a pathway to peace and solidarity with people of all faiths and none. Following an introduction by the Abbot of the Prinknash community\, Chris subsequently studied at the Dalai Lama’s monastery in Dharamshala\, India. \n\n\n\nChris regularly delivers talks\, workshops and retreats and has introduced the practice of meditation in the Christian tradition to thousands of people in the UK and abroad. He is known for his ability to communicate the subtleties of the practice and complex spiritual texts in simple\, practical ways\, resonant with the challenges of daily life. \n\n\n\nChris is the author of The Missing Peace | Meditation as a Spiritual Path to Peace\, Community and Oneness published by Canterbury Press in the Autumn. \n\n\n\nTestimonials \n\n\n\n“From start to finish\, the retreat was incredible.  The schedule was ideal: a mix of lectures\, meditation\, silent meals and private practice. This was my first experience of The School of Contemplative Life and I drove 9 hours on a gut instinct to attend. It was worth every minute. Chris is an attentive and insightful teacher; clearly with a wealth of knowledge.  This is the kind of teaching I have been searching for! Thank you for making it possible. I feel relieved and excited to have landed on a path I can trust. I know I can learn\, develop and grow under such guidance. Post-retreat\, I feel a sense of inner peace and calm that is new.. a wonderful beginning.” \n\n\n\n“The content was extraordinary and life-changing\, not to be dramatic! I was already a (newish) meditator but the extra sitting meditations\, the walking meditations in your beautiful grounds\, in the quiet company of others\, was very special. Chris is a wonderful teacher\, speaking with precision and clarity about the simple (yet deep) truths of who we really are.  I felt the presence of God more clearly than perhaps I ever have done and know that in some way I am changed\, even now I’m back home.” \n\n\n\n“There is so much that I valued about this retreat and so many things I will be taking forward: being given the opportunity to practise meditation multiple times through the day\, the teaching\, the peace\, the fellowship with others\, learning to train my mind.” \n\n\n\nThe School of Contemplative Life events should be understood as only providing spiritual guidance and advice to help participants deepen their own meditation practice and understanding. Many people have experienced improvements in general wellbeing through meditation practice. However\, if you suffer from any mental\, emotional or physical health conditions\, please ask your medical practitioner if it is advisable for you to attend an event with us\, make sure you always follow your medical practitioner’s advice and let us know in general terms without sharing specific details. \n\n\n\nEARLY BIRD RATE: £350 (standard room) or £380 (character room) if booked by 16th January 2026! Retreat price: £370 (standard room) or £400 (character room)  \n\n\n\nPrice includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. Please contact the Abbey directly if you would like to extend your stay. \n\n\n\n\nbook now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor any questions\, queries or if you’d like to know more\, please call  01572 717254 or alternatively email us: info@launde.org.uk

SUMMARY:March Quiet Day: Holy Week - 'Path of Glory' ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:The pattern of Christ’s death and resurrection is found all around us\, in nature and in our own spiritual growth. The path to glory travels through the cross\, and God can bring renewal out of brokenness through healing. Even if we believe this\, we often find it hard to truly surrender ourselves to following in the footsteps of Christ. Join us at the start of Holy Week to observe and reflect on responses to Christ’s passion in those who walked with Jesus and in ourselves. \n\n\n\n“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies\, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies\, it bears much fruit.” John 12:24 \n\n\n\nLed by Revd Anna Walker \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Revd Anna Walker is the new Deputy Warden of Launde Abbey and a spiritual director. She grew up in the Finnish Lutheran Church and trained for ministry in Helsinki\, later moving to the UK with her husband\, whom she met while spending time at the Taizé community in France. They have two children together and have shared a longstanding commitment to community life and retreat ministry. Anna trained for ordination at Lancaster Priory\, served her curacy in Preston\, and was previously Director of Whalley Abbey. She has a deep passion for spiritual direction and is drawn to seek God in silence\, simplicity and creation. In her spare time\, she enjoys baking\, reading\, journaling\, and spending time outdoors. \n\n\n\nQuiet Day price: £46 includes lunch and coffee and tea throughout the day.Thinking about extending your time at Launde Abbey this Holy Week? See our Holy Week events page for more information on what is available. Come for as short or as long a time as you are able. \n\n\n\nYes – I’d like to take part in this Quiet Day!  (Please complete this form to request a place.)  \n\n\n\n \n \n Quiet Day Registration Form\n \n \n Contact DetailsName(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n PhoneAddress \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n Postcode\n \n \n Country\n AfghanistanÅland IslandsAlbaniaAlgeriaAmerican SamoaAndorraAngolaAnguillaAntarcticaAntigua and BarbudaArgentinaArmeniaArubaAustraliaAustriaAzerbaijanBahamasBahrainBangladeshBarbadosBelarusBelgiumBelizeBeninBermudaBhutanBoliviaBonaire\, Sint Eustatius and SabaBosnia and HerzegovinaBotswanaBouvet IslandBrazilBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBrunei DarussalamBulgariaBurkina FasoBurundiCambodiaCameroonCanadaCape VerdeCayman IslandsCentral African RepublicChadChileChinaChristmas IslandCocos IslandsColombiaComorosCongoCongo\, Democratic Republic of theCook IslandsCosta RicaCôte d'IvoireCroatiaCubaCuraçaoCyprusCzechiaDenmarkDjiboutiDominicaDominican RepublicEcuadorEgyptEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaEritreaEstoniaEswatiniEthiopiaFalkland IslandsFaroe IslandsFijiFinlandFranceFrench GuianaFrench PolynesiaFrench Southern TerritoriesGabonGambiaGeorgiaGermanyGhanaGibraltarGreeceGreenlandGrenadaGuadeloupeGuamGuatemalaGuernseyGuineaGuinea-BissauGuyanaHaitiHeard Island and McDonald IslandsHoly SeeHondurasHong KongHungaryIcelandIndiaIndonesiaIranIraqIrelandIsle of ManIsraelItalyJamaicaJapanJerseyJordanKazakhstanKenyaKiribatiKorea\, Democratic People's Republic ofKorea\, Republic ofKuwaitKyrgyzstanLao People's Democratic RepublicLatviaLebanonLesothoLiberiaLibyaLiechtensteinLithuaniaLuxembourgMacaoMadagascarMalawiMalaysiaMaldivesMaliMaltaMarshall IslandsMartiniqueMauritaniaMauritiusMayotteMexicoMicronesiaMoldovaMonacoMongoliaMontenegroMontserratMoroccoMozambiqueMyanmarNamibiaNauruNepalNetherlandsNew CaledoniaNew ZealandNicaraguaNigerNigeriaNiueNorfolk IslandNorth MacedoniaNorthern Mariana IslandsNorwayOmanPakistanPalauPalestine\, State ofPanamaPapua New GuineaParaguayPeruPhilippinesPitcairnPolandPortugalPuerto RicoQatarRéunionRomaniaRussian FederationRwandaSaint BarthélemySaint Helena\, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint MartinSaint Pierre and MiquelonSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSamoaSan MarinoSao Tome and PrincipeSaudi ArabiaSenegalSerbiaSeychellesSierra LeoneSingaporeSint MaartenSlovakiaSloveniaSolomon IslandsSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsSouth SudanSpainSri LankaSudanSurinameSvalbard and Jan MayenSwedenSwitzerlandSyria Arab RepublicTaiwanTajikistanTanzania\, the United Republic ofThailandTimor-LesteTogoTokelauTongaTrinidad and TobagoTunisiaTürkiyeTurkmenistanTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluUgandaUkraineUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited StatesUruguayUS Minor Outlying IslandsUzbekistanVanuatuVenezuelaViet NamVirgin Islands\, BritishVirgin Islands\, U.S.Wallis and FutunaWestern SaharaYemenZambiaZimbabwe \n \n \n DetailsDate of Quiet Day(Required)How did you hear about this event?Social MediaGoogleWord of MouthRefer a FriendPast ParticipantOtherAnything else we need to know?\n Submit

SUMMARY:One a Penny\, Two a Penny\, Hot Cross Buns: A Hot Cross Bun–Making Reflection ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Join Launde Abbey’s Deputy Warden\, Revd Anna Walker\, for a day of baking and reflection. Under the expert guidance of Launde Abbey chef and patisserie baker\, Graham\, we will engage in the slow process of mixing\, kneading\, shaping and waiting\, which models to us a beautiful rhythm for prayer and activity\, reflection and mindful doing\, and the outcome will be lovely fresh hot cross buns to taste and take home. As well as learning about this Lenten tradition\, we will be thinking about the images of yeast and bread in the Bible\, and specifically the bread of life\, the body of Christ\, broken for the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Revd Anna Walker is the new Deputy Warden of Launde Abbey and a spiritual director. She grew up in the Finnish Lutheran Church and trained for ministry in Helsinki\, later moving to the UK with her husband\, whom she met while volunteering at the Taizé community in France. Anna is drawn to seek God in silence\, simplicity and creation. In her spare time\, she enjoys baking\, reading\, journaling\, and spending time outdoors. \n\n\n\nPrice: £46 includes lunch and coffee and tea throughout the day.Why not think about extending your time at Launde by staying overnight after the event?  Check for availability and a quote when you contact us. \n\n\n\nPlaces are limited and so pre-booking is essential. SUMMARY:April Quiet Day: Desert Fathers and Mothers: Wisdom for today? ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Desert Fathers and Mothers: Wisdom for today? \n\n\n\nCome on a journey back to the deserts of Egypt in the 4th century. Here we will find the beginnings of a new movement of people\, disillusioned with the world that they lived in.  These men and women went into the desert to seek God. Living in solitude\, or monastic communities\, their lives and sayings became well known and many were added to their number. Even more came to seek their wisdom and counsel. We know these people today as the Desert Fathers and Mothers\, and\, even in 21st century Britain\, they have much to teach us.  \n\n\n\nHow can we incorporate a little of their experience and example into our own lives?  \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to live a simple and Godly life\, when we have so many distractions?   \n\n\n\nA day away at Launde Abbey gives us the opportunity to weave a little more silence into our lives and perhaps to explore incorporating this a little more into our daily rhythm too. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLed by Revd Alison Long. \n\n\n\nAlison is a spiritual director and curate who has been part of the Launde College of Chaplains and ministry team since last July.  \n\n\n\nQuiet Day price: £46 includes lunch and coffee and tea throughout the day.Why not think about extending your time at Launde by staying overnight after the event.  Check for availability and a quote when you contact us. \n\n\n\nYes – I’d like to take part in this Quiet Day! SUMMARY:Soul Filled Meanderings
DESCRIPTION:Take a couple of hours\, put on your coat and boots and explore and experience God’s creation. This is an opportunity to stop\, look and listen. Using all your senses to know and understand more about our Everlasting Father and Creator God.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis guided walk will be led by Jo de Graaf. \n\n\n\nJo lives in Harby in the beautiful Vale of Belvoir with her husband\, Cor. They have five children and Jo is a very proud Oma to 10 grandchildren\, who bring the family such joy. A few years ago she felt God prompting and calling her to some form of ministry. Jo believes her ministry is to bring people into God’s Kingdom through love; using contemplative spirituality\, hospitality and service of all kinds to help people feel a sense of wholeness within the love of God. Not only is Jo one of our volunteer chaplains\, but is now the Associate Minister in the Parish of Old Dalby\, and also Lay Chair of Framland Deanery. \n\n\n\nThis walk is planned to begin at 10:30 am. Meet at the front of the main house. Why not stay afterwards for lunch at Launde Abbey café? \n\n\n\nSuitable for all abilities. Alternative activities are available if the weather is wet. \n\n\n\nPrice: £5 per person. Places are limited to groups of 10\, so please book in advance.  \n\n\n\nThis price includes refreshments and a lovely homemade slice of cake from Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\nFor more information or to book your place call 01572 717254 or email info@launde.org.uk

SUMMARY:May Quiet Day: In Beauty May I Walk
DESCRIPTION:A day of quiet\, contemplative noticing: of noticing beauty all around us and exploring how\, by taking time to really notice and really see and experience beauty with all our senses\, we start to learn so much more of the presence of God and how it can transform our lives. The 9th-century philosopher\, Eriugena\, taught that “to know the Creator\, we need only to look at the things He created.” \n\n\n\nJo de Graaf\, one of our college of chaplains\, will be exploring how we can find peace\, joy\, love and hope in the beauty of nature.  \n\n\n\nThere will be the opportunity\, for those who wish\, to accompany Jo on a ‘soul-filled meandering’ in the beautiful grounds of Launde Abbey\, suitable for everyone\, regardless of mobility. We will walk slowly\, gently and prayerfully\, stopping frequently and just noticing what is right in front of us. \n\n\n\nThere will be plenty of “indoor” activities\, too\, for those who would rather not “meander”\, and\, of course\, plenty of time to be still and absorb the peace and beauty of Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLed by Jo De Graaf\, one of our College of Chaplains. (Please complete this form to request a place.)  \n\n\n\n \n \n Quiet Day Registration Form\n \n \n Contact DetailsName(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n PhoneAddress \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n Postcode\n \n \n Country\n AfghanistanÅland IslandsAlbaniaAlgeriaAmerican SamoaAndorraAngolaAnguillaAntarcticaAntigua and BarbudaArgentinaArmeniaArubaAustraliaAustriaAzerbaijanBahamasBahrainBangladeshBarbadosBelarusBelgiumBelizeBeninBermudaBhutanBoliviaBonaire\, Sint Eustatius and SabaBosnia and HerzegovinaBotswanaBouvet IslandBrazilBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBrunei DarussalamBulgariaBurkina FasoBurundiCambodiaCameroonCanadaCape VerdeCayman IslandsCentral African RepublicChadChileChinaChristmas IslandCocos IslandsColombiaComorosCongoCongo\, Democratic Republic of theCook IslandsCosta RicaCôte d'IvoireCroatiaCubaCuraçaoCyprusCzechiaDenmarkDjiboutiDominicaDominican RepublicEcuadorEgyptEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaEritreaEstoniaEswatiniEthiopiaFalkland IslandsFaroe IslandsFijiFinlandFranceFrench GuianaFrench PolynesiaFrench Southern TerritoriesGabonGambiaGeorgiaGermanyGhanaGibraltarGreeceGreenlandGrenadaGuadeloupeGuamGuatemalaGuernseyGuineaGuinea-BissauGuyanaHaitiHeard Island and McDonald IslandsHoly SeeHondurasHong KongHungaryIcelandIndiaIndonesiaIranIraqIrelandIsle of ManIsraelItalyJamaicaJapanJerseyJordanKazakhstanKenyaKiribatiKorea\, Democratic People's Republic ofKorea\, Republic ofKuwaitKyrgyzstanLao People's Democratic RepublicLatviaLebanonLesothoLiberiaLibyaLiechtensteinLithuaniaLuxembourgMacaoMadagascarMalawiMalaysiaMaldivesMaliMaltaMarshall IslandsMartiniqueMauritaniaMauritiusMayotteMexicoMicronesiaMoldovaMonacoMongoliaMontenegroMontserratMoroccoMozambiqueMyanmarNamibiaNauruNepalNetherlandsNew CaledoniaNew ZealandNicaraguaNigerNigeriaNiueNorfolk IslandNorth MacedoniaNorthern Mariana IslandsNorwayOmanPakistanPalauPalestine\, State ofPanamaPapua New GuineaParaguayPeruPhilippinesPitcairnPolandPortugalPuerto RicoQatarRéunionRomaniaRussian FederationRwandaSaint BarthélemySaint Helena\, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint MartinSaint Pierre and MiquelonSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSamoaSan MarinoSao Tome and PrincipeSaudi ArabiaSenegalSerbiaSeychellesSierra LeoneSingaporeSint MaartenSlovakiaSloveniaSolomon IslandsSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsSouth SudanSpainSri LankaSudanSurinameSvalbard and Jan MayenSwedenSwitzerlandSyria Arab RepublicTaiwanTajikistanTanzania\, the United Republic ofThailandTimor-LesteTogoTokelauTongaTrinidad and TobagoTunisiaTürkiyeTurkmenistanTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluUgandaUkraineUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited StatesUruguayUS Minor Outlying IslandsUzbekistanVanuatuVenezuelaViet NamVirgin Islands\, BritishVirgin Islands\, U.S.Wallis and FutunaWestern SaharaYemenZambiaZimbabwe \n \n \n DetailsDate of Quiet Day(Required)How did you hear about this event?Social MediaGoogleWord of MouthRefer a FriendPast ParticipantOtherAnything else we need to know?\n Submit

SUMMARY:Labyrinth Retreat
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe labyrinth is an ancient symbol\, dating back over 4\,000 years and appearing in many different countries\, cultures and faith traditions. It has been used for centuries as a tool for prayer and meditation. Today\, amidst the pressures and uncertainty of modern life\, people are once again finding themselves drawn to the labyrinth. Walking the winding path of a labyrinth helps us to unwind and offers time and space for quiet reflection. It clears the mind\, relaxes the body\, and opens the heart\, allowing us to respond from the deepest part of ourselves that knows wisdom.  \n\n\n\nDuring our time together\, we will learn more about the fascinating history of labyrinths\, their symbolism\, spirituality and the many ways in which they are being used today. We will walk the labyrinth (both indoors and outside in the garden) with different intentions each day\, and enjoy the tranquillity of a candlelit labyrinth walk after dark. There will be an opportunity to learn how to draw a finger labyrinth and to discover how finger labyrinths can be used in prayer.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNickie Fidgin is an experienced labyrinth facilitator and has been leading retreats and quiet days for many years. In 2015\, she set up the Peaceful Path Project to introduce schools to the labyrinth as a tool for exploring spirituality and wellbeing.  Having originally trained as a nurse\, Nickie is passionate about helping people live in wellness. She also teaches Capacitar\, a body\, mind and spirit programme for trauma healing and wellbeing\, which includes the labyrinth. Nickie loves facilitating singing groups to lift the spirits and warm the heart!  \n\n\n\nEARLY BIRD RATE: £474 (standard room) or £519 (character room) if booked by 16th March 2026Retreat price: £504 (standard room) or £549 (character room)  \n\n\n\nPrice includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. SUMMARY:Classical Concert and Cream Tea: Lisa Nelsen (Flute) & Julian Metzger (Cello)
DESCRIPTION:We look forward to continuing our Launde Abbey Concert Series throughout 2026\, bringing you intimate classical performances from the finest musicians. Join us for an hour of enchanting classical music in our medieval chapel\, followed by the famous Launde Abbey Cream Tea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescribed by The Times – London as “…a flautist and a half…”\, Lisa Nelsen is internationally recognised for her versatility as a soloist\, chamber and orchestra member\, as well as an educator and mentor. Having participated in the 2024 Guinness World Record event with Donne’s “Let Her Music Play”\, new projects have included working with composers at MusicFest in Aberystwyth\, Cardiff University Music Department\, and an incredibly special concert in Oxford at the Jacqueline Du Pré Hall\, curated by Kenneth Hesketh and the Royal College of Music. Lisa performs and collaborates with artists such as Julian Metzger\, Michelle Santiago\, Eleanor Turner and Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas\, planning programmes together for the next 2 years. Lisa performed with the National Youth Concert Band\, premiering a new concerto for flute by Bill Connor. She has presented online concerts during the pandemic with her chamber ensembles and participated in the Tampere and E-Flute Festivals. Her contribution to the hashtag ‘100 Days of Practice’ on Instagram (four times!) was a means to improve her own consistency in her work and inspire onlookers to ‘have a go’. As Chair of the British Flute Society\, Lisa relished contact with the community of players around the country. The position offered opportunities to share in activities and chat through mutual interests in the flute. She’s a professor of flute at Junior Guildhall School of Music\, and is an Artist for Yamaha Classical Division International playing on a 14-karat 900-series flute.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGerman-born cellist Julian Metzger is a versatile and compelling musical voice whose career spans concerto playing\, chamber music and orchestral performance. Raised in a family where music was both vocation and inheritance—his father a music teacher and choral conductor\, his uncle a professional cellist—Julian began playing the cello at the age of four\, forging an early and enduring relationship with the instrument. His formative years led him from his native Bad Berleburg to England\, where he studied at Wells Cathedral School under Dr Ioan Davies\, former cellist of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet. He continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Stefan Popov\, later refining his artistry through private mentorship with Raphael Wallfisch. Along the way\, musical encounters with David Strange\, Steve Doane\, Yfrah Neaman\, Paul Roberts and Norbert Brainin further shaped his expressive depth and interpretative insight. \n\n\n\nAs a concerto soloist\, Julian brings intensity\, elegance and narrative clarity to the stage. He has appeared with a range of orchestras under conductors including Alexander Walker\, Adrian Brown and Jacques Cohen\, performing works from the central cello repertoire alongside lesser-known concertos by composers such as Tartini\, Monn\, Bridge\, Kabalevsky and Miaskovsky.  \n\n\n\nChamber music lies at the heart of Julian’s musical identity. He has collaborated with artists including Christopher Redgate\, Lisa Nelsen\, Giovanni Guzzo and Marco Fatichenti\, and has appeared at festivals such as the International Casals Festival\, Buckingham Summer Festival and Musicfest Aberystwyth. A committed advocate for ensemble music\, he founded the Metzger Ensemble and co-founded Enigma14 and the English String Trio\, exploring repertoire from intimate string works to adventurous mixed ensembles. \n\n\n\nAlongside performing\, Julian is a dedicated teacher\, working across leading schools and universities and maintaining a busy private studio. Many of his students now study at major conservatoires. Rooted in lyricism and driven by curiosity\, Julian Metzger continues to shape a career defined by collaboration\, exploration and the evolving voice of the cello. \n\n\n\nLaunde Classical Concerts offer the chance to hear an hour-long live concert in the company of some of the country’s leading performers\, followed by a gorgeous Launde cream tea. \n\n\n\nA Launde Abbey Fundraising Event. \n\n\n\nTickets £22 (or £17 for concert only).
