SUMMARY:‘Celtish’ Concert With Nigel Cameron and Julie Cameron-Hall
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, 21st January\, where husband-and-wife duo Celtish will bring a rich blend of Celtic-inspired music to the Main Chapel for an evening concert as part of January’s ‘The Space: A Creative Retreat‘ here at Launde Abbey. Nigel Cameron (Irish whistles and percussion) and Julie Cameron-Hall (classically trained fiddle) are both accomplished singers\, songwriters and musicians\, performing original songs\, instrumentals and timeless melodies. \n\n\n\nTheir concerts are presented in two halves with an interval for refreshments\, combining uplifting and reflective music with stories inspired by Celtic Saints such as Patrick\, Brendan and Hilda. The evening promises warmth\, depth and moments of joy\, offering music that connects faith\, heritage and community. \n\n\n\nAbout CELTISH – Nigel Cameron & Julie Cameron-Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHusband & wife musical duo ‘Celtish’ have toured extensively throughout the UK and beyond. They have appeared twice on Songs of Praise\, giving what the BBC called “A spine-tingling performance.”   \n\n\n\nThey have also recently been featured artists in two documentary films\,’ Celtic Rhythms’ (by Rebecca Friedlander) and ‘Love Speaks through St. Patrick’ (by  Carl Wesley Anderson). \n\n\n\nNigel plays Irish whistles & percussion; Julie (classically trained) plays fiddle; They both sing and write their own songs.  \n\n\n\nTheir concert performances include material from the albums ‘Lorica’\, ‘Journey’\, ‘Home’\, ‘Devotion’ and ‘Celtish (instrumental)’ albums. \n\n\n\n\n“A spine-tingling performance.” BBC Songs of Praise \n\n\n\n”Fearsomely talented. Beautiful and inspiring.” 10/10  Cross Rhythms \n\n\n\n “Overflows with dazzling musicianship. Deserves to be heard by the worldwide worshipping church.”***** Premier Christianity \n\n\n\n “Powerful and encouraging. Stunning and original. Hauntingly beautiful.” Bishop Richard Jackson \n\n\n\n “A real treat. Great musicianship\, beautifully recorded. Highly recommended.” Stuart Townend \n\n\n\n“This beautiful music ministered deeply to my soul. It is skillful and sincerely expresses deep spiritual truths.” Joanne Hogg \n\n\n\n“Wonderful… beautifully written\, arranged and performed.” Andy Park \n\n\n\n\nRecordings \n\n\n\nAs individual artists\, Nigel (Northern Ireland) & Julie (England) both have had many years of experience performing and recording music. Working together as a married couple since 2014\, they have recorded a total of six ‘Celtish’ albums\, but also produce music for other artists under their record label ‘Sounds of Wonder.’ They travel extensively using ‘Celtish’ as their band name as well as sometimes playing with other musicians including their classical improvisation group ‘Epiphany.’ \n\n\n\nConcertsPerformances by ‘Celtish’ usually take the form of a concert in two halves (with an interval for refreshments in-between) including a range of upbeat and reflective music\, instrumentals\, original songs and familiar lyrics set to timeless melodies. They usually share stories to introduce some of their songs\, including ones they’ve written about Celtic Saints including Patrick\, Brendan\, Columba\, Kevin\, Aidan & Hilda who all have amazing stories to tell about the spread of Christianity throughout these islands.  \n\n\n\nMission \n\n\n\nNigel & Julie write: “We hope that hosting a ‘Celtish’ concert in your venue can help build bridges between Church & community. The popularity of Celtic music and the uniqueness of our sound\, strongly featuring fiddle and whistles\, seems to give our concerts a wide appeal to audiences. We believe the music has power to bring healing and hope and there are usually one or two extravagant ‘joy-bursts’ in the programme. We also hope to dispel some myths about the ancient Celtic Saints” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets £10. SUMMARY:Waiting for the Light: Music and Readings for Advent
DESCRIPTION:Amidst the warm glow of candlelight\, join us at Launde Abbey for an afternoon of Music and Readings from 4:00 pm to prepare for the season. We will be immersed in the beauty of scripture and song\, and you can stay afterwards for mulled wine and mince pies. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to be welcoming the Aylesbury Consort of Voices for a second year running\, an auditioned acappella choir\, to lead us in our music. The choir performs to support local churches and charities across Buckinghamshire\, Oxfordshire\, and Hertfordshire\, with some members being professional musicians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvent marks the beginning of the Christian year. It is a period of longing\, hope and expectation. As we approach the darkest time of the year the Christian community looks forward to the dawning of a new light\, to a time when God’s promises to his people\, down through history\, are fulfilled. The readings from the Hebrew Scriptures articulate the hopes of the community of faith and the nature of God’s love. \n\n\n\nAdvent is characterised by the experience of waiting and watching and by the contrasting themes of light and darkness\, judgement and mercy\, life and death. These things remind us that Advent is not merely a countdown to Christmas and the birth of a baby in a stable in Bethlehem. It is a season to contemplate the mystery of the one who grew up to be crucified\, to rise from the dead and to come in glory to judge the living and the dead. \n\n\n\nA Launde Abbey Fundraising Event. \n\n\n\nTickets £25. Call 01572 717254 or email info@launde.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Meditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat ***2 SPACEs LEFT***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat\, led by Chris Whittington\, founder of the School of Contemplative Life. \n\n\n\nWith astonishing wisdom\, originality and directness\, Meister Eckhart invites us to let go of all our conceptions of God and enter the groundless ground in which we are one with God and all creation. \n\n\n\nWhy? To manifest this oneness in a life of love and compassion. For Eckhart\, the spiritual life is inseparable from the ethical life. \n\n\n\n“If a person were in an ecstasy as St Paul was\, and if they knew of a sick person who needed a bowl of soup from them\, I would consider it far better if you were to leave that rapture out of love and help the needy person out of greater love.”  \n\n\n\nRecognised today as one of the greatest mystics of the Western Christian tradition\, Eckhart has much to say which can help us greatly in meeting many pressing contemporary issues. \n\n\n\nEckhart had a profound sense of the equality of all human beings\, and despite living within a male-dominated Church and society\, he was deeply influenced by women. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to the urgent need to protect our planet\, Eckhart had a profound sense of the essential goodness of creation\, that each of us and every created thing bears witness to the invisible source of all life. \n\n\n\n“Someone who knows nothing but creatures would never need to attend to any sermons\, for every creature is full of God and is a book.” \n\n\n\nFor Eckhart\, God is the ever-present ground of all creation\, the oneness in which “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). \n\n\n\nThe extraordinary gift of his teaching\, is how it can help us cultivate awareness of this oneness\, so that we\, like him\, might come to see God in all things and all things in God. \n\n\n\nThrough a flow of talks\, extended meditation practice and conversation\, we will explore the teaching of Meister Eckhart\, focusing in particular on: \n\n\n\n\nReleasing into the oneness of God\n\n\n\nHow a spiritual life is inseparable from an ethical life\n\n\n\nRadical equality\n\n\n\nParallels in the teaching of Meister Eckhart and Buddhism\n\n\n\nHow awareness of oneness is the deepest basis for compassion and justice\, for our care of each other and of our precious world.\n\n\n\n\n—————- \n\n\n\nThe retreat has been carefully crafted to be relevant and accessible to anyone searching for truth and peace\, regardless of their faith\, beliefs or previous experience of meditation. \n\n\n\nA detailed timetable for the retreat will be sent to everyone attending. The retreat starts on Friday at 4:30 pm with an orientation talk\, followed by a period of silent meditation before dinner. Short talks across the weekend will be balanced with periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, time for private reflection and enjoyment of the beautiful grounds. The retreat will finish after lunch and a closing conversation on Sunday. \n\n\n\nEarly morning practice \n\n\n\nSaturday and Sunday begin at 6:30 am with meditation practice. Early morning meditation is a wonderful way to greet the day together. While we very much encourage everyone to attend this session\, if this is difficult for you for any reason\, please don’t worry. It is always enough to do what we can – or what our life allows. \n\n\n\nSmall Reflection Groups \n\n\n\nSmall reflection groups\, hosted by Chris\, provide an opportunity for up to seven people to meet and explore together a question or two about their meditation practice\, or how practice relates to what they have heard during a talk or to daily life. We can learn so much by sharing with and listening to others. \n\n\n\n———- \n\n\n\nBeing on retreat is a precious opportunity to be still\, to be silent\, to practice living simply and peacefully and cultivate the gift of loving-awareness as we devote ourselves to the depth-dimension of faith and life. \n\n\n\nThe focus of the retreat is silent meditation practice and we will practice bringing loving-awareness to all our daily activities – while sitting\, while walking or eating\, when we are simply enjoying a glass of water. We will practice living each moment deeply. \n\n\n\nThe practice of silence will commence when the retreat begins at 16:30 on the Friday and continue until after lunch on the Sunday. \n\n\n\nAlthough the practice of silence may be new to some\, most people find this a powerful and wonderful experience. Maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment – walking\, moving\, and doing things quietly – is important for our practice and a gift we can offer to each other. \n\n\n\nThe last session of each day will be an opportunity for conversation together\, to reflect on the content of the talks and what we have experienced in our meditation through the day. \n\n\n\nThe retreat timetable includes periods of private practice time for sitting and walking meditation. Some people find it helpful to bring a craft activity to accompany times of private sitting meditation. If you decide to do this\, the craft should be very simple and not likely to stimulate thoughts. The Desert Fathers and Mothers were famous for weaving baskets! \n\n\n\nYou may wish to bring warm\, comfy clothes and a waterproof jacket/umbrella for walking meditation in the event of inclement weather. A notepad and pen will also be useful. \n\n\n\nRetreat Leader \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Whittington is the Founder of The School of Contemplative Life. He was introduced to contemplative practice during several years of formation when he lived at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey. Chris’ monastic teachers\, including Sylvester Houedard OSB\, taught meditation as a universal wisdom found within all the great spiritual traditions\, a pathway to peace and solidarity with people of all faiths and none. Following an introduction by the Abbot of the Prinknash community\, Chris subsequently studied at the Dalai Lama’s monastery in Dharamshala\, India. Chris regularly delivers talks\, workshops and retreats and has introduced the practice of meditation in the Christian tradition to thousands of people in the UK and abroad. \n\n\n\nFor information about the School of Contemplative Life\, please visit: www.schoolofcontemplativelife.com OR https://www.youtube.com/@schoolofcontemplativelife  \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £350 (standard room) or £380 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £330 (standard room) or £360 (character room) if booked by 5th September 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. SUMMARY:November Quiet Day: Praying with the Psalms – Love and Lament ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Our chaplain\, Catherine\, will be reflecting with us on some themes from the Psalms. The Biblical scholar and teacher\, Walter Brueggemann\, developed a helpful way of categorising Psalms\, noticing that some are focused on ‘orientation’\, at times when life makes sense\, ‘disorientation’\, when life does not make sense and ‘re-orientation’ as we shift our focus to the future. Catherine will be drawing out some of these themes from our chosen Psalms for the day\, allowing plenty of time and space for  participants to pray\, walk and listen to God as well.Led by Revd Catherine Wright. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore coming to work at Launde Abbey in 2023\, Catherine previously served as Director of Ministerial Formation at Ridley Hall and taught Christian History and Spirituality in the Cambridge Federation. Prior to that\, she spent twelve years in the Diocese of Bath and Wells as Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Dean of Women Clergy. Her passion is to help disciples of Christ deepen their spiritual life and engage in worship\, work\, and mission. SUMMARY:Stepping Into the Bible
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor many people\, including Christians\, the Bible is a bit of a closed book; this retreat opens it up. We step into the world of the Bible where we discover an evolving story in which people struggle with the same questions as we do\, and where old ideas are discarded and are replaced by new. We see how the Old and New Testaments relate to one another\, and as we move from the old to the new we see how ideas about God and Jesus\, salvation and morality changed over the centuries. We are led on a journey of faith that helps us get on to God’s wavelength; we discover that Christian faith is more than a set of beliefs about God\, prayer and getting to heaven. It is very much about the way we live our lives\, here and now\, so that God’s will is done and God’s kingdom comes on earth as in heaven. \n\n\n\nIt’s from the old I travel to the new \n\n\n\nkeep me travelling along with you. \n\n\n\nCanon Peter Sills: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe retreat will be led by Canon Dr Peter Sills. After an initial career teaching Law at Kingston\, Peter served in three parishes in the Diocese of Southwark before moving to Ely where he was Vice-Dean of the Cathedral. Peter is an engaging spiritual teacher and pilgrimage guide. He has led courses and retreats for churches and groups in the UK\, USA and at the Anglican Centre in Rome; this retreat is based on his recent book Six Steps Into The Bible. www.peter-sills.co.uk \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 11th August 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat.
