SUMMARY:September Quiet Day: 'Creation sings the Father’s song' ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:“Creation sings the Father’s song” – finding God’s presence in all of creation. \n\n\n\nAt the start of Creationtide\, the month in the Christian calendar particularly dedicated to God as the Sustainer of all life\,  come and spend a day amidst the beauty of God’s creation here at Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\nTake time considering how much of scripture talks about the nature of God in the natural world around us and how we can become more aware of and alive to it if we take time to notice. \n\n\n\nMirabai Starr wrote: “when we bless the ordinary with the gift of our full attention\, it brims over with holy light.”  \n\n\n\nAs part of the day there will be an opportunity to go on a “Soul Filled Meandering” with Jo around the grounds if you should so wish – a slow\, gentle\, contemplative walk in search of that “holy light”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis quiet day will be led by Jo De Graaf\, one of our College of Chaplains. Jo lives in Harby in the beautiful Vale of Belvoir with her husband\, Cor. They have five children and Jo is a very proud Oma to 10 grandchildren\, who bring the family such joy. A few years ago she felt God prompting and calling her to some form of ministry. Jo believes her ministry is to bring people into God’s Kingdom through love; using contemplative spirituality\, hospitality and service of all kinds to help people feel a sense of wholeness within the love of God. Not only is Jo one of our volunteer chaplains\, but is now the Associate Minister in the Parish of Old Dalby\, and also Lay Chair of Framland Deanery. \n\n\n\nQuiet Day price: £46 includes lunch and coffee and tea throughout the day.Why not think about extending your time at Launde by staying overnight after the event.  Check for availability and a quote when you contact us. \n\n\n\nYes – I’d like to take part in this Quiet Day!  (Please complete this form to request a place.)  \n\n\n\n\n \n \n Quiet Day Registration Form\n \n \n Contact DetailsName(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n PhoneAddress \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n Postcode\n \n \n Country\n AfghanistanÅland IslandsAlbaniaAlgeriaAmerican SamoaAndorraAngolaAnguillaAntarcticaAntigua and BarbudaArgentinaArmeniaArubaAustraliaAustriaAzerbaijanBahamasBahrainBangladeshBarbadosBelarusBelgiumBelizeBeninBermudaBhutanBoliviaBonaire\, Sint Eustatius and SabaBosnia and HerzegovinaBotswanaBouvet IslandBrazilBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBrunei DarussalamBulgariaBurkina FasoBurundiCambodiaCameroonCanadaCape VerdeCayman IslandsCentral African RepublicChadChileChinaChristmas IslandCocos IslandsColombiaComorosCongoCongo\, Democratic Republic of theCook IslandsCosta RicaCôte d'IvoireCroatiaCubaCuraçaoCyprusCzechiaDenmarkDjiboutiDominicaDominican RepublicEcuadorEgyptEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaEritreaEstoniaEswatiniEthiopiaFalkland IslandsFaroe IslandsFijiFinlandFranceFrench GuianaFrench PolynesiaFrench Southern TerritoriesGabonGambiaGeorgiaGermanyGhanaGibraltarGreeceGreenlandGrenadaGuadeloupeGuamGuatemalaGuernseyGuineaGuinea-BissauGuyanaHaitiHeard Island and McDonald IslandsHoly SeeHondurasHong KongHungaryIcelandIndiaIndonesiaIranIraqIrelandIsle of ManIsraelItalyJamaicaJapanJerseyJordanKazakhstanKenyaKiribatiKorea\, Democratic People's Republic ofKorea\, Republic ofKuwaitKyrgyzstanLao People's Democratic RepublicLatviaLebanonLesothoLiberiaLibyaLiechtensteinLithuaniaLuxembourgMacaoMadagascarMalawiMalaysiaMaldivesMaliMaltaMarshall IslandsMartiniqueMauritaniaMauritiusMayotteMexicoMicronesiaMoldovaMonacoMongoliaMontenegroMontserratMoroccoMozambiqueMyanmarNamibiaNauruNepalNetherlandsNew CaledoniaNew ZealandNicaraguaNigerNigeriaNiueNorfolk IslandNorth MacedoniaNorthern Mariana IslandsNorwayOmanPakistanPalauPalestine\, State ofPanamaPapua New GuineaParaguayPeruPhilippinesPitcairnPolandPortugalPuerto RicoQatarRéunionRomaniaRussian FederationRwandaSaint BarthélemySaint Helena\, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint MartinSaint Pierre and MiquelonSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSamoaSan MarinoSao Tome and PrincipeSaudi ArabiaSenegalSerbiaSeychellesSierra LeoneSingaporeSint MaartenSlovakiaSloveniaSolomon IslandsSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsSouth SudanSpainSri LankaSudanSurinameSvalbard and Jan MayenSwedenSwitzerlandSyria Arab RepublicTaiwanTajikistanTanzania\, the United Republic ofThailandTimor-LesteTogoTokelauTongaTrinidad and TobagoTunisiaTürkiyeTurkmenistanTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluUgandaUkraineUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited StatesUruguayUS Minor Outlying IslandsUzbekistanVanuatuVenezuelaViet NamVirgin Islands\, BritishVirgin Islands\, U.S.Wallis and FutunaWestern SaharaYemenZambiaZimbabwe \n \n \n DetailsDate of Quiet Day(Required)How did you hear about this event?Social MediaGoogleWord of MouthRefer a FriendPast ParticipantOtherAnything else we need to know?\n Submit

SUMMARY:The Practice of Joy: CS Lewis Retreat ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn this Creationtide retreat\, we explore the topic of joy with C S Lewis\, author of the Narnia Chronicles (nature was one of the chief mediums through which joy came to him). We will explore the different aspects of the subject that he so delights in; finding joy in creation\, discovering how we can share the joy\, learning about different modes and manifestations of joy\, anticipating the joy of heaven\, and working out how joy could become our daily ‘practice’.  In his autobiography\, based around the concept of joy\, Lewis said ‘In a sense the central story of my life is about nothing else’. \n\n\n\nThis is a retreat for the refreshment of the spirit as Andy Swinford leads us on a deep dive into the joy-filled life and writings of C S Lewis (no prior knowledge needed!). The wind of joy breathes through both his stories and non-fiction and we will draw close to God by using the insights they provide as jumping-off points for our own experiences of joyous wonder. There will be space for reflection\, walking\, prayer\, and enjoying God’s wonderful creation in the beautiful grounds and surroundings of Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAndy Swinford delivers multimedia presentations and online classes about C S Lewis\, as well as leading retreats on the spiritual enrichment to be gained from the writings of the two friends Lewis and Tolkien. He is the author of ‘The Practice of Joy: insights from the stories of C S Lewis’ (Grove) and a contributor to ‘The Christian Tradition in English Literature’ (Zondervan). He lives in Birmingham and is a former teacher of English Literature. Since retiring from teaching beekeeping has become one of his chief joys. \n\n\n\n Retreat price: £495 (standard room) or £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 23rd June 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Rooted and Grounded: Going Deeper Into Spiritual Practice ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Rooted and Grounded: Going Deeper Into Spiritual Practice. \n\n\n\nA retreat hosted jointly by Renovaré Britain & Ireland (renovare.org.uk) and the Launde Abbey community (laundeabbey.org.uk)  \n\n\n\nPaul shared with the Ephesians his yearning “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith as you are being rooted and grounded in love“ (Ephesians 3.17). Do you want to develop those same deeper spiritual roots? Would you like to be able to cultivate a listening heart? Do you long to be transformed to become more like Christ?  \n\n\n\nRooted and Grounded is a retreat for those who want to tap into the rich wisdom and experience of the various Christian spiritual traditions: contemplative and charismatic\, catholic and evangelical\, political and personal. We’ll take time to find rest and refreshment in prayer\, worship\, silence and rest. And we’ll explore a wide range of spiritual practices you can take away with you to deepen your life of faith. You might want to be more resilient in the face of exhausting demands. You might be looking for a deeper foundation for your ministry. You might be wrestling with the question: how do I live a flourishing life? If so\, this retreat is for you.  \n\n\n\nThe team for this retreat is the Revd Roy Searle\, the Revd Rachel Hudson\, the Revd Alison Myers\, and the Revd Chris Webb.   \n\n\n\nRevd Roy Searle\n\n\n\nRoy is a Companion and one of the founders of the Northumbria Community. He has served as a past President of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and is a founding member of Renovare Britain and Ireland. A popular conference speaker\, writer\, retreat leader\, pioneer mentor and spiritual director\, Roy is passionate about encouraging people to love God\, listen well\, think deeply\, and live authentically and generously. He is an associate with the Northumbrian collective and The Commons Cooperative. He is married to Shirley and lives in their beloved Northumberland. They have four children and eight grandchildren. \n\n\n\nRachel Hudson\n\n\n\nRachel Hudson has a background in teaching and youth work which led towards psychotherapy as a second career. She has worked in that field for 25 years\, specialising in work with church ministers of all denominations and in trauma practice. She has led retreats for over 20 years\, usually creative\, active and biblically based\, developing aspects of the spiritual formation Renovare is committed to. Ordained as an Anglican minister late in life ( a third career!) she served for 7 years before retirement and is now enjoying new developments in pastoral supervision and retreats. She still offers training\, and has written material for new books\, alongside being a contributor to Daily Bread Bible reading notes. Rachel is an adoptive parent to 2 adult children with 3 grandchildren living locally to her in Northumberland.  \n\n\n\nRevd Alison Myers\n\n\n\nAlison came to Launde Abbey having been a Team Rector in rural ministry in Cambridgeshire.  She has crafted and led many reflective services and gatherings using spoken word\, music\, silence and creative prayer stations.  She is also an experienced workshop leader and mentor\, combining spirituality and theology with the practical challenges of leadership\, team-working and managing change\, informed by her working life before she was ordained as well as theological study and lifelong faith.  Alison loves praying outdoors\, a good cup of coffee\, noticing the cycle of the seasons and encouraging a wondering faith. She lives with her family on-site at Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\nRevd Chris Webb\n\n\n\nChris Webb is an Anglican priest\, author\, speaker and teacher dedicated to helping people experience a richer walk with God by growing in prayer and the spiritual life. He has ministered in a wide variety of contexts: as president of Renovaré\, a spiritual formation ministry in the USA; as parish priest in Welsh farming communities and steelworking towns; and even in a church for the homeless. Chris is the author of two books: The Fire of the Word (2011) and God-Soaked Life (2017). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) or £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 28th July 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Stepping Into the Bible
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor many people\, including Christians\, the Bible is a bit of a closed book; this retreat opens it up. We step into the world of the Bible where we discover an evolving story in which people struggle with the same questions as we do\, and where old ideas are discarded and are replaced by new. We see how the Old and New Testaments relate to one another\, and as we move from the old to the new we see how ideas about God and Jesus\, salvation and morality changed over the centuries. We are led on a journey of faith that helps us get on to God’s wavelength; we discover that Christian faith is more than a set of beliefs about God\, prayer and getting to heaven. It is very much about the way we live our lives\, here and now\, so that God’s will is done and God’s kingdom comes on earth as in heaven. \n\n\n\nIt’s from the old I travel to the new \n\n\n\nkeep me travelling along with you. \n\n\n\nCanon Peter Sills: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe retreat will be led by Canon Dr Peter Sills. After an initial career teaching Law at Kingston\, Peter served in three parishes in the Diocese of Southwark before moving to Ely where he was Vice-Dean of the Cathedral. Peter is an engaging spiritual teacher and pilgrimage guide. He has led courses and retreats for churches and groups in the UK\, USA and at the Anglican Centre in Rome; this retreat is based on his recent book Six Steps Into The Bible. www.peter-sills.co.uk \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 11th August 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:November Quiet Day: Praying with the Psalms – Love and Lament ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Our chaplain\, Catherine\, will be reflecting with us on some themes from the Psalms. The Biblical scholar and teacher\, Walter Brueggemann\, developed a helpful way of categorising Psalms\, noticing that some are focused on ‘orientation’\, at times when life makes sense\, ‘disorientation’\, when life does not make sense and ‘re-orientation’ as we shift our focus to the future. Catherine will be drawing out some of these themes from our chosen Psalms for the day\, allowing plenty of time and space for  participants to pray\, walk and listen to God as well.Led by Revd Catherine Wright. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore coming to work at Launde Abbey in 2023\, Catherine previously served as Director of Ministerial Formation at Ridley Hall and taught Christian History and Spirituality in the Cambridge Federation. Prior to that\, she spent twelve years in the Diocese of Bath and Wells as Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Dean of Women Clergy. Her passion is to help disciples of Christ deepen their spiritual life and engage in worship\, work\, and mission. She is one of our College of Chaplains at Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\nCatherine is married to Geoff Boucher\, who is also ordained. Together\, they enjoy long-distance walking\, particularly along the South West Coastal Path and in the Derbyshire Peak District. But we’re also incredibly thankful and delighted that Dale is stepping in to lead the retreat. With Dale’s experience\, passion and love of birds\, we know it will be a truly special time. \n\n\n\nNow in its fifth year\, the Launde birdwatching retreat has become a much-loved event. Each retreat reveals how many birds can be seen\, heard and learned from in the local area – last year’s impressive total of 76 species included Osprey\, Hobby\, Cuckoo\, Lesser Whitethroat and Garden Warbler. \n\n\n\nCome and see these birds for yourself\, and enjoy a time of quiet Celtic Christian worship\, biblical reflection and guided birdwatching walks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReverend Dale Hanson is a recently retired Anglican priest\, having served in ministry for nearly 40 years. His vocation has taken him across the UK and internationally\, including two periods in Hong Kong\, time in France\, and most recently to the Falkland Islands\, where he served as locum chaplain at Port Stanley Cathedral. Dale is well known in the North East from his time as vicar of St Nicholas Church in Durham – often called “the church in the marketplace.” He now regularly co-leads Even Sparrows retreats with Mark on Holy Island and at Kilmalieu. He is passionate about his faith\, an experienced retreat leader and has been an enthusiastic bird watcher and wildlife photographer for most of his life. \n\n\n\n\n\nOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\n\n\n\nRetreat price: £495 (standard room) or £540 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £465 (standard room) or £510 (character room) if booked by 2nd September 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. It may be possible for you to extend your stay with us by adding an extra night before or after this retreat. SUMMARY:Meditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat ***2 SPACEs LEFT***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat\, led by Chris Whittington\, founder of the School of Contemplative Life. \n\n\n\nWith astonishing wisdom\, originality and directness\, Meister Eckhart invites us to let go of all our conceptions of God and enter the groundless ground in which we are one with God and all creation. \n\n\n\nWhy? To manifest this oneness in a life of love and compassion. For Eckhart\, the spiritual life is inseparable from the ethical life. \n\n\n\n“If a person were in an ecstasy as St Paul was\, and if they knew of a sick person who needed a bowl of soup from them\, I would consider it far better if you were to leave that rapture out of love and help the needy person out of greater love.”  \n\n\n\nRecognised today as one of the greatest mystics of the Western Christian tradition\, Eckhart has much to say which can help us greatly in meeting many pressing contemporary issues. \n\n\n\nEckhart had a profound sense of the equality of all human beings\, and despite living within a male-dominated Church and society\, he was deeply influenced by women. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to the urgent need to protect our planet\, Eckhart had a profound sense of the essential goodness of creation\, that each of us and every created thing bears witness to the invisible source of all life. \n\n\n\n“Someone who knows nothing but creatures would never need to attend to any sermons\, for every creature is full of God and is a book.” \n\n\n\nFor Eckhart\, God is the ever-present ground of all creation\, the oneness in which “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). \n\n\n\nThe extraordinary gift of his teaching\, is how it can help us cultivate awareness of this oneness\, so that we\, like him\, might come to see God in all things and all things in God. \n\n\n\nThrough a flow of talks\, extended meditation practice and conversation\, we will explore the teaching of Meister Eckhart\, focusing in particular on: \n\n\n\n\nReleasing into the oneness of God\n\n\n\nHow a spiritual life is inseparable from an ethical life\n\n\n\nRadical equality\n\n\n\nParallels in the teaching of Meister Eckhart and Buddhism\n\n\n\nHow awareness of oneness is the deepest basis for compassion and justice\, for our care of each other and of our precious world.\n\n\n\n\n—————- \n\n\n\nThe retreat has been carefully crafted to be relevant and accessible to anyone searching for truth and peace\, regardless of their faith\, beliefs or previous experience of meditation. \n\n\n\nA detailed timetable for the retreat will be sent to everyone attending. The retreat starts on Friday at 4:30 pm with an orientation talk\, followed by a period of silent meditation before dinner. Short talks across the weekend will be balanced with periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, time for private reflection and enjoyment of the beautiful grounds. The retreat will finish after lunch and a closing conversation on Sunday. \n\n\n\nEarly morning practice \n\n\n\nSaturday and Sunday begin at 6:30 am with meditation practice. Early morning meditation is a wonderful way to greet the day together. While we very much encourage everyone to attend this session\, if this is difficult for you for any reason\, please don’t worry. It is always enough to do what we can – or what our life allows. \n\n\n\nSmall Reflection Groups \n\n\n\nSmall reflection groups\, hosted by Chris\, provide an opportunity for up to seven people to meet and explore together a question or two about their meditation practice\, or how practice relates to what they have heard during a talk or to daily life. We can learn so much by sharing with and listening to others. \n\n\n\n———- \n\n\n\nBeing on retreat is a precious opportunity to be still\, to be silent\, to practice living simply and peacefully and cultivate the gift of loving-awareness as we devote ourselves to the depth-dimension of faith and life. \n\n\n\nThe focus of the retreat is silent meditation practice and we will practice bringing loving-awareness to all our daily activities – while sitting\, while walking or eating\, when we are simply enjoying a glass of water. We will practice living each moment deeply. \n\n\n\nThe practice of silence will commence when the retreat begins at 16:30 on the Friday and continue until after lunch on the Sunday. \n\n\n\nAlthough the practice of silence may be new to some\, most people find this a powerful and wonderful experience. Maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment – walking\, moving\, and doing things quietly – is important for our practice and a gift we can offer to each other. \n\n\n\nThe last session of each day will be an opportunity for conversation together\, to reflect on the content of the talks and what we have experienced in our meditation through the day. \n\n\n\nThe retreat timetable includes periods of private practice time for sitting and walking meditation. Some people find it helpful to bring a craft activity to accompany times of private sitting meditation. If you decide to do this\, the craft should be very simple and not likely to stimulate thoughts. The Desert Fathers and Mothers were famous for weaving baskets! \n\n\n\nYou may wish to bring warm\, comfy clothes and a waterproof jacket/umbrella for walking meditation in the event of inclement weather. A notepad and pen will also be useful. \n\n\n\nRetreat Leader \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Whittington is the Founder of The School of Contemplative Life. He was introduced to contemplative practice during several years of formation when he lived at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey. Chris’ monastic teachers\, including Sylvester Houedard OSB\, taught meditation as a universal wisdom found within all the great spiritual traditions\, a pathway to peace and solidarity with people of all faiths and none. Following an introduction by the Abbot of the Prinknash community\, Chris subsequently studied at the Dalai Lama’s monastery in Dharamshala\, India. Chris regularly delivers talks\, workshops and retreats and has introduced the practice of meditation in the Christian tradition to thousands of people in the UK and abroad. \n\n\n\nFor information about the School of Contemplative Life\, please visit: www.schoolofcontemplativelife.com OR https://www.youtube.com/@schoolofcontemplativelife  \n\n\n\nRetreat price: £350 (standard room) or £380 (character room)EARLY BIRD RATE: £330 (standard room) or £360 (character room) if booked by 5th September 2025!Price includes en-suite accommodation\, all meals\, and all retreat resources. SUMMARY:Waiting for the Light: Music and Readings for Advent
DESCRIPTION:Amidst the warm glow of candlelight\, join us at Launde Abbey for an afternoon of Music and Readings from 4:00 pm to prepare for the season. We will be immersed in the beauty of scripture and song\, and you can stay afterwards for mulled wine and mince pies. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to be welcoming the Aylesbury Consort of Voices for a second year running\, an auditioned acappella choir\, to lead us in our music. The choir performs to support local churches and charities across Buckinghamshire\, Oxfordshire\, and Hertfordshire\, with some members being professional musicians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvent marks the beginning of the Christian year. It is a period of longing\, hope and expectation. As we approach the darkest time of the year the Christian community looks forward to the dawning of a new light\, to a time when God’s promises to his people\, down through history\, are fulfilled. The readings from the Hebrew Scriptures articulate the hopes of the community of faith and the nature of God’s love. \n\n\n\nAdvent is characterised by the experience of waiting and watching and by the contrasting themes of light and darkness\, judgement and mercy\, life and death. These things remind us that Advent is not merely a countdown to Christmas and the birth of a baby in a stable in Bethlehem. It is a season to contemplate the mystery of the one who grew up to be crucified\, to rise from the dead and to come in glory to judge the living and the dead. \n\n\n\nA Launde Abbey Fundraising Event. \n\n\n\nTickets £25. Call 01572 717254 or email info@launde.org.uk.

This will be a time to tune into the heart beat of the old priest’s prayer as he anticipated a new future for the people of God. \n\n\n\nJohn Rackley offers this day as a gentle pause before the demands of the pre-Christmas season are upon us. He is a member of Launde Abbey’s College of Chaplains and a minister at Christchurch in Clarendon Park\, Leicester. He writes for the Bible Reading Fellowship and has recently completed reflections on a Spirituality of the Night.
