SUMMARY:November Quiet Day: Praying with the Psalms – Love and Lament ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Our chaplain\, Catherine\, will be reflecting with us on some themes from the Psalms. The Biblical scholar and teacher\, Walter Brueggemann\, developed a helpful way of categorising Psalms\, noticing that some are focused on ‘orientation’\, at times when life makes sense\, ‘disorientation’\, when life does not make sense and ‘re-orientation’ as we shift our focus to the future. Catherine will be drawing out some of these themes from our chosen Psalms for the day\, allowing plenty of time and space for  participants to pray\, walk and listen to God as well.Led by Revd Catherine Wright. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore coming to work at Launde Abbey in 2023\, Catherine previously served as Director of Ministerial Formation at Ridley Hall and taught Christian History and Spirituality in the Cambridge Federation. Prior to that\, she spent twelve years in the Diocese of Bath and Wells as Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Dean of Women Clergy. Her passion is to help disciples of Christ deepen their spiritual life and engage in worship\, work\, and mission. She is one of our College of Chaplains at Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\nCatherine is married to Geoff Boucher\, who is also ordained. Together\, they enjoy long-distance walking\, particularly along the South West Coastal Path and in the Derbyshire Peak District. \n\n\n\nQuiet Day price: £46 includes lunch and coffee and tea throughout the day.Why not think about extending your time at Launde by staying overnight after the event.  Check for availability and a quote when you contact us. \n\n\n\nYes – I’d like to take part in this Quiet Day! SUMMARY:Meditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat ***2 SPACEs LEFT***
DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeditation & the Contemporary Wisdom of Meister Eckhart Retreat\, led by Chris Whittington\, founder of the School of Contemplative Life. \n\n\n\nWith astonishing wisdom\, originality and directness\, Meister Eckhart invites us to let go of all our conceptions of God and enter the groundless ground in which we are one with God and all creation. \n\n\n\nWhy? To manifest this oneness in a life of love and compassion. For Eckhart\, the spiritual life is inseparable from the ethical life. \n\n\n\n“If a person were in an ecstasy as St Paul was\, and if they knew of a sick person who needed a bowl of soup from them\, I would consider it far better if you were to leave that rapture out of love and help the needy person out of greater love.”  \n\n\n\nRecognised today as one of the greatest mystics of the Western Christian tradition\, Eckhart has much to say which can help us greatly in meeting many pressing contemporary issues. \n\n\n\nEckhart had a profound sense of the equality of all human beings\, and despite living within a male-dominated Church and society\, he was deeply influenced by women. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to the urgent need to protect our planet\, Eckhart had a profound sense of the essential goodness of creation\, that each of us and every created thing bears witness to the invisible source of all life. \n\n\n\n“Someone who knows nothing but creatures would never need to attend to any sermons\, for every creature is full of God and is a book.” \n\n\n\nFor Eckhart\, God is the ever-present ground of all creation\, the oneness in which “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). \n\n\n\nThe extraordinary gift of his teaching\, is how it can help us cultivate awareness of this oneness\, so that we\, like him\, might come to see God in all things and all things in God. \n\n\n\nThrough a flow of talks\, extended meditation practice and conversation\, we will explore the teaching of Meister Eckhart\, focusing in particular on: \n\n\n\n\nReleasing into the oneness of God\n\n\n\nHow a spiritual life is inseparable from an ethical life\n\n\n\nRadical equality\n\n\n\nParallels in the teaching of Meister Eckhart and Buddhism\n\n\n\nHow awareness of oneness is the deepest basis for compassion and justice\, for our care of each other and of our precious world.\n\n\n\n\n—————- \n\n\n\nThe retreat has been carefully crafted to be relevant and accessible to anyone searching for truth and peace\, regardless of their faith\, beliefs or previous experience of meditation. \n\n\n\nA detailed timetable for the retreat will be sent to everyone attending. The retreat starts on Friday at 4:30 pm with an orientation talk\, followed by a period of silent meditation before dinner. Short talks across the weekend will be balanced with periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, time for private reflection and enjoyment of the beautiful grounds. The retreat will finish after lunch and a closing conversation on Sunday. \n\n\n\nEarly morning practice \n\n\n\nSaturday and Sunday begin at 6:30 am with meditation practice. Early morning meditation is a wonderful way to greet the day together. While we very much encourage everyone to attend this session\, if this is difficult for you for any reason\, please don’t worry. It is always enough to do what we can – or what our life allows. \n\n\n\nSmall Reflection Groups \n\n\n\nSmall reflection groups\, hosted by Chris\, provide an opportunity for up to seven people to meet and explore together a question or two about their meditation practice\, or how practice relates to what they have heard during a talk or to daily life. We can learn so much by sharing with and listening to others. \n\n\n\n———- \n\n\n\nBeing on retreat is a precious opportunity to be still\, to be silent\, to practice living simply and peacefully and cultivate the gift of loving-awareness as we devote ourselves to the depth-dimension of faith and life. \n\n\n\nThe focus of the retreat is silent meditation practice and we will practice bringing loving-awareness to all our daily activities – while sitting\, while walking or eating\, when we are simply enjoying a glass of water. We will practice living each moment deeply. \n\n\n\nThe practice of silence will commence when the retreat begins at 16:30 on the Friday and continue until after lunch on the Sunday. \n\n\n\nAlthough the practice of silence may be new to some\, most people find this a powerful and wonderful experience. Maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment – walking\, moving\, and doing things quietly – is important for our practice and a gift we can offer to each other. \n\n\n\nThe last session of each day will be an opportunity for conversation together\, to reflect on the content of the talks and what we have experienced in our meditation through the day. \n\n\n\nThe retreat timetable includes periods of private practice time for sitting and walking meditation. Some people find it helpful to bring a craft activity to accompany times of private sitting meditation. If you decide to do this\, the craft should be very simple and not likely to stimulate thoughts. The Desert Fathers and Mothers were famous for weaving baskets! \n\n\n\nYou may wish to bring warm\, comfy clothes and a waterproof jacket/umbrella for walking meditation in the event of inclement weather. A notepad and pen will also be useful. \n\n\n\nRetreat Leader \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Whittington is the Founder of The School of Contemplative Life. He was introduced to contemplative practice during several years of formation when he lived at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey. Chris’ monastic teachers\, including Sylvester Houedard OSB\, taught meditation as a universal wisdom found within all the great spiritual traditions\, a pathway to peace and solidarity with people of all faiths and none. Following an introduction by the Abbot of the Prinknash community\, Chris subsequently studied at the Dalai Lama’s monastery in Dharamshala\, India. SUMMARY:November Saturday Quiet Day: “Overwhelmed? - Come and Rest a while” ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:Overwhelmed by life\, by love\, by a tidal wave of emotions? Please receive this personal invitation from me\, Andrew Hall\, as we seek to find rest for your soul. \n\n\n\nA day set aside to catch our breath and infuse our life with the Holy Spirit’s gentle breeze. \n\n\n\nBeing overwhelmed is something we are all aware of and have probably all experienced. One thing I have noticed is that it is becoming a more frequent event in people’s lives. \n\n\n\nToday we will consider\, contemplate and begin to unpack this word; what it means and how it affects us. \n\n\n\nIn this non stop world how can we offer our overwhelmed selves to God\, the author and perfector of our faith? \n\n\n\n\nRev. Andrew Hall is a Parish Priest\, Rector of Burbage with Aston Flamville and IME2 officer for the Leicester Diocese. He is also a Spiritual director and Retreat leader\, a contemplative soul\, who likes gardening\, reading and sports. “My heart is to be a ‘cure of souls’ as my priestly vocation implies\, spending time with pilgrims is one of life’s greatest callings and I am honoured that God has called me to this life.” \n\n\n\n\nQuiet Day price: £46 includes lunch and coffee and tea throughout the day.Why not think about extending your time at Launde by staying overnight after the event.  Check for availability and a quote when you contact us. \n\n\n\nYes – I’d like to take part in this Quiet Day!  (Please complete this form to request a place.)  \n\n\n\n \n \n Quiet Day Registration Form\n \n \n Contact DetailsName(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n PhoneAddress \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n Postcode\n \n \n Country\n AfghanistanÅland IslandsAlbaniaAlgeriaAmerican SamoaAndorraAngolaAnguillaAntarcticaAntigua and BarbudaArgentinaArmeniaArubaAustraliaAustriaAzerbaijanBahamasBahrainBangladeshBarbadosBelarusBelgiumBelizeBeninBermudaBhutanBoliviaBonaire\, Sint Eustatius and SabaBosnia and HerzegovinaBotswanaBouvet IslandBrazilBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBrunei DarussalamBulgariaBurkina FasoBurundiCambodiaCameroonCanadaCape VerdeCayman IslandsCentral African RepublicChadChileChinaChristmas IslandCocos IslandsColombiaComorosCongoCongo\, Democratic Republic of theCook IslandsCosta RicaCôte d'IvoireCroatiaCubaCuraçaoCyprusCzechiaDenmarkDjiboutiDominicaDominican RepublicEcuadorEgyptEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaEritreaEstoniaEswatiniEthiopiaFalkland IslandsFaroe IslandsFijiFinlandFranceFrench GuianaFrench PolynesiaFrench Southern TerritoriesGabonGambiaGeorgiaGermanyGhanaGibraltarGreeceGreenlandGrenadaGuadeloupeGuamGuatemalaGuernseyGuineaGuinea-BissauGuyanaHaitiHeard Island and McDonald IslandsHoly SeeHondurasHong KongHungaryIcelandIndiaIndonesiaIranIraqIrelandIsle of ManIsraelItalyJamaicaJapanJerseyJordanKazakhstanKenyaKiribatiKorea\, Democratic People's Republic ofKorea\, Republic ofKuwaitKyrgyzstanLao People's Democratic RepublicLatviaLebanonLesothoLiberiaLibyaLiechtensteinLithuaniaLuxembourgMacaoMadagascarMalawiMalaysiaMaldivesMaliMaltaMarshall IslandsMartiniqueMauritaniaMauritiusMayotteMexicoMicronesiaMoldovaMonacoMongoliaMontenegroMontserratMoroccoMozambiqueMyanmarNamibiaNauruNepalNetherlandsNew CaledoniaNew ZealandNicaraguaNigerNigeriaNiueNorfolk IslandNorth MacedoniaNorthern Mariana IslandsNorwayOmanPakistanPalauPalestine\, State ofPanamaPapua New GuineaParaguayPeruPhilippinesPitcairnPolandPortugalPuerto RicoQatarRéunionRomaniaRussian FederationRwandaSaint BarthélemySaint Helena\, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint MartinSaint Pierre and MiquelonSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSamoaSan MarinoSao Tome and PrincipeSaudi ArabiaSenegalSerbiaSeychellesSierra LeoneSingaporeSint MaartenSlovakiaSloveniaSolomon IslandsSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsSouth SudanSpainSri LankaSudanSurinameSvalbard and Jan MayenSwedenSwitzerlandSyria Arab RepublicTaiwanTajikistanTanzania\, the United Republic ofThailandTimor-LesteTogoTokelauTongaTrinidad and TobagoTunisiaTürkiyeTurkmenistanTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluUgandaUkraineUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited StatesUruguayUS Minor Outlying IslandsUzbekistanVanuatuVenezuelaViet NamVirgin Islands\, BritishVirgin Islands\, U.S.Wallis and FutunaWestern SaharaYemenZambiaZimbabwe \n \n \n DetailsDate of Quiet Day(Required)How did you hear about this event?Social MediaGoogleWord of MouthRefer a FriendPast ParticipantOtherAnything else we need to know?\n Submit

SUMMARY:Waiting for the Light: Music and Readings for Advent
DESCRIPTION:Amidst the warm glow of candlelight\, join us at Launde Abbey for an afternoon of Music and Readings from 4:00 pm to prepare for the season. We will be immersed in the beauty of scripture and song\, and you can stay afterwards for mulled wine and mince pies. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to be welcoming the Aylesbury Consort of Voices for a second year running\, an auditioned acappella choir\, to lead us in our music. The choir performs to support local churches and charities across Buckinghamshire\, Oxfordshire\, and Hertfordshire\, with some members being professional musicians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvent marks the beginning of the Christian year. It is a period of longing\, hope and expectation. As we approach the darkest time of the year the Christian community looks forward to the dawning of a new light\, to a time when God’s promises to his people\, down through history\, are fulfilled. The readings from the Hebrew Scriptures articulate the hopes of the community of faith and the nature of God’s love. \n\n\n\nAdvent is characterised by the experience of waiting and watching and by the contrasting themes of light and darkness\, judgement and mercy\, life and death. These things remind us that Advent is not merely a countdown to Christmas and the birth of a baby in a stable in Bethlehem. It is a season to contemplate the mystery of the one who grew up to be crucified\, to rise from the dead and to come in glory to judge the living and the dead. \n\n\n\nA Launde Abbey Fundraising Event. \n\n\n\nTickets £25. Call 01572 717254 or email info@launde.org.uk.
