SUMMARY:Icon Painting Retreat ***FULLY BOOKED***
DESCRIPTION:These five-day courses with professional iconographer Peter Murphy are suitable for all levels including beginners. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will learn the traditional techniques and ancient methods for producing their own hand-painted icon in the Byzantine style. Each course will concentrate on reproducing either a half-length or head and shoulders icon from a number of prototypes\, including Christ\, The Mother of God and various different saints such as St Francis and St Nicholas. \n\n\n\nOver the week the course members will learn traditional gilding techniques with 24-carat gold leaf for backgrounds and halos and how to make and use egg tempera paint fresh each day from free-range egg yolks and organic mineral pigments.  \n\n\n\nAs the course unfolds and participants settle into the gentle and prayerful daily rhythm of painting and gilding Peter will introduce course members to the fundamental theological principles involved in the creation of an icon\, its spiritual meaning and symbolism. \n\n\n\nAll materials\, including a handmade gessoed Serbian lime wood icon panel\, gold leaf and organic mineral pigments\, stage-by-stage worksheets and the use of specialist gilding tools and professional quality paint brushes are included in the price of the course. \n\n\n\nAll participants need to bring to the course is themselves\, an apron\, a good pair of scissors\, and an open mind. \n\n\n\nPeter Murphy\n\n\n\nPeter Murphy was born in Leeds and was educated at the University of East London. He trained with iconographer Guillem Ramos Poqui in London. He was Vice Chairman of the Society of Tempera Painters and is a member of the British Association of Iconographers. He has been commissioned by a number of churches in the UK and has also been employed by a number of museums and has recently undertaken three major commissions for Hereford Cathedral. DESCRIPTION:book now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“May God bless the work of our hands”: Praying and Gardening with the Launde Abbey Community \n\n\n\nCome and enjoy an immersive week of volunteering in our beautiful gardens and grounds\, under the supervision of our head gardener\, Karen\, and alongside members of the Launde Abbey Community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou’ll be able to spend the mornings as part of a team working on a range of tasks and projects in our Victorian walled garden\, sunken garden\, or other areas of the grounds. In the afternoons\, there’s the option to continue gardening or take some time for personal rest and reflection. \n\n\n\nThis retreat offers an opportunity to integrate spiritual reflection with practical work in nature. Each day includes the chance to join the community for chapel worship\, with a daily reflection or reflective walk. \n\n\n\nThere will also be an opportunity to meet with and hear from Jeremy Purseglove\, naturalist\, landscape gardener\, and Abbey advisor\, on his vision for enhancing the gardens and grounds of Launde Abbey. \n\n\n\nWe take pride in our hospitality\, and guests will enjoy full board catering and a private\, comfortable bedroom with ensuite facilities as part of your stay with us. \n\n\n\nAll necessary tools and equipment are provided at Launde Abbey\, though you’re welcome to bring your own non-powered gardening tools if you prefer. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the perfect Sunday afternoon out…  \n\n\n\nWe look forward to continuing our Launde Abbey Concert Series throughout 2025\, bringing you intimate classical performances from the finest musicians. Join us for an hour of enchanting classical music in our medieval chapel\, followed by the famous Launde Abbey Cream Tea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYvonne Bloor is classical guitarist and composer based in Leicester. She has a Master of Music degree in Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music and is a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music\, a Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music and the London College of Music. She studied with Nicola Hall\, Michael Lewin\, and Craig Ogden. \n\n\n\nFor many years she was a regular contributor to Guitar International Magazine\, writing articles on guitar playing. \n\n\n\nShe has worked as an examiner for Trinity Guildhall School of Music and taught in numerous schools and colleges. She is currently a guitar tutor at the University of Leicester. She has broadcast on BBC radio and played on TV in Antigua and the UK. She plays with orchestras and chamber music ensembles and has given performances at the Royal Festival Hall\, London\, the Bridgewater Hall\, Manchester and De Montfort Hall\, Leicester. \n\n\n\nShe has recorded three albums of her own music – Promise\, Evocation and Heartstrings. Her compositions have been described as: “mature\, melodic\, interestingly harmonised\, lovely little pieces that come from the pen of a lady whose CD I have played a good number of times since reviewing it!” (Classical Guitar Magazine.)
