Launde’s 900th Anniversary
In the summer of 2019 we’re launching a year of celebrations to mark 900 years of prayer, worship and hospitality at Launde Abbey. We’ll be hosting a series of special events including a spectacular weekend celebration, Ancient Wells – Living Water in June 2019. Full information about tickets for these events can be found by clicking here.
Ancient Wells – Living Water: 21 – 24 June 2019
Our anniversary celebrations begin on Friday 21st with a remarkable presentation of Mark – The Gospel , the entire Gospel of Mark performed from memory by our Warden, David Newman. During the evening you’ll have the chance to experience perhaps the most dramatic and direct of the Gospels from beginning to end as it was originally meant to be heard.
Saturday 22nd sees The Great Celebration: a huge service of celebration led by the Bishops from the dioceses of Leicester and Peterborough followed by an afternoon packed with events and activities to suit all ages and tastes: poetry readings with Malcolm Guite, medieval archery, walks in the grounds and Launde woods, tours of Launde, and so much more.
Saturday closes with our Gala Dinner. Served in a sumptuously arrayed marquee in the stunning grounds of Launde Abbey, this dinner will offer an opportunity to experience Launde’s famed hospitality and cuisine at it’s finest, before enjoying an after-dinner presentation by acclaimed author and speaker Adrian Plass.
On Sunday 23rd our residential guests will enjoy a quiet morning of worship and walks in the local area. In the afternoon we’re holding a Classical Concert and Cream Tea with local young musicians followed by the delights of a Launde cream tea. The day concludes with the unique opportunity to hear Choirs Together at Launde, classic sung evensong led by the choirs of Leicester and Peterborough cathedrals coming together for the first time in their long histories.
Finally on Monday 24th we’re proud to host Remembering Cromwell, a presentation and conversation between Hilary Mantel (author of Wolf Hall and Diarmaid MacCulloch (author of Thomas Cromwell: a life) about Reformation England, the life of Cromwell and the place of Launde in that incredible story. This morning event will feature two presentations by our speakers followed by coffee and a time of open questions and discussion. The event will conclude with a buffet lunch.
Come and join us for one or more of these wonderful events!
