The Rule of Six

What is the Rule of Six?

The Prime Minister recently announced that “In England … we’re introducing the Rule of Six. You must not meet socially in groups of more than six … This will apply in any setting, indoors or outdoors.” Later government guidance clarified that this means “you must not meet with people from other households socially in groups of more than 6.” But there is a difference between social gatherings of 6 people and people meeting for organised events in COVID-19 Secure venues. Different rules apply to these situations

How are retreats or other gatherings at Launde affected?

Your gathering (retreat or conference) can still take place. The same government guidance states that “COVID-19 Secure venues, such as places of worship, restaurants and hospitality venues, can still host larger numbers.” This means that Launde Abbey (which follows all relevant COVID-19 Secure provisions through our Keeping You Safe programme) can safely host your event – and we’ll be delighted to do so!

The Rule of Six means that you can’t book to attend with a mixed household group* larger than six, and you shouldn’t socialise in a way that mixes households or larger groups. You can still talk to other people on retreat with you, but you need to observe social distancing and other safety measures (such as mask wearing and hand washing) as appropriate.

Can I still visit the Café?

Yes, although we can’t welcome groups larger than six unless you are all part of the same household or support bubble. You will also be asked to provide contact details for NHS Test and Trace, which will be held for 21 days – it’s now a legal requirement for us to collect this information.

I’m leading a retreat group or conference. Anything I should know?

The Rule of Six simply means no-one should attend your event with a mixed household group* larger than six, and attendees shouldn’t socialise in a way that mixes households or larger groups. We would ask you to plan your programme with this in mind, and to encourage your attendees to be aware of current expectations and of our Keeping You Safe programme.

* a mixed household group is any group formed from more than one household (but not in the same support bubble)
