Newsletter: May 2019
Launde 900 is almost here! This year Launde begins celebrating 900 years of history as a monastic house, a private home and now as a retreat centre. Through all nine centuries is woven a story of prayer, worship, friendship and hospitality in the midst of the beauty of the east midlands countryside. There’s an amazing range of events taking place:
- Mark – The Gospel (a live performance by the Warden)
- The Great Celebration (worship and special events)
- Gala Dinner with author Adrian Plass
- Classical Concert and Cream Tea
- Choral Evensong with Leicester and Peterborough Cathedral Choirs
- Remembering Cromwell with Hilary Mantel and Diarmaid MacCulloch
Photography Retreat: 31 May – 2 June
Led by Anglican priest and award-winning photographer Steve Radley, this retreat will help you combine mindfulness and photography to discover beauty in different things and learn the power of your story, revealed in what you photograph. Retreatants will only require a digital camera and enthusiasm. So, bring your smartphone, compact camera or larger DSLR camera and walk into the light.
Beginners’ Retreat: 19 – 21 July
Going on retreat for the first time can feel like a daunting experience. What am I letting myself in for? Will I enjoy it? What about the silence? Will I cope with it? What do I do with it? This semi silent retreat, led by Helen Newman and Cathy Davies from the Launde community, is for those who have never been on retreat before, or certainly not on a silent retreat.
Environment Retreat: 12 – 15 August
A fascinating retreat with Anglican priest Andrew Hall exploring the sacred relationships between Soil, Air and Water. We will investigate our connectedness as sons and daughters of the earth, woven together by God, for his indwelling and for our joint delight. “We need the sun, the moon, the stars, the rivers, and the mountains and birds, the fish in the sea, to evoke a world of mystery, to evoke the sacred” – Thomas Berry.
Have you discovered our amazing programme of Literature Lectures yet? Every month Dr Jane Mackay takes us on a journey through one of the literary classics, beginning a conversation that continues over a delightful Launde lunch! Some of the books coming up in the series include Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South, Heinrich Harrer’s Seven Years in Tibet and the Charles Dickens classic David Copperfield. Why not treat yourself to a little culture and cuisine?
