Praying with Poetry

Take some time out to explore the world of poetry and prayer. We will be both reading poetry prayerfully, and praying through our own writing, covering some basics of structure and metaphor as we go. We will see where poetry and prayer meet in scripture, and dive into the work of some prayerful poets, especially priest-poets such as George Herbert, John Donne and Gerard Manley Hopkins, exploring their poetic prayers of passion and struggle. Whether you are already a writer and reader of poetry or have no experience of it, this retreat will give you the space to enrich your prayer life with the beautiful words and rhythms of poetry.

This retreat will be led by Amy Scott Robinson and Amy Boucher Pye.

Amy Scott Robinson

Amy Scott Robinson is the author of Image of the Invisible and Images of Grace. A performance storyteller, poet and author, she produces resources for churches and is a frequent contributor to the Church Times. She lives in Bury St Edmunds, where her husband is the vicar of St Mary’s church, and is the commissioning editor for children’s and youth books at Kevin Mayhew.

Amy Boucher Pye

Amy Boucher Pye is a London-based author, speaker, retreat leader, and spiritual director. She’s the author of seven books and resources, including the recently published Transforming Love: How Friendship with Jesus Changes Us and Holding onto Hope, featuring her dad’s artwork. Her first book, Finding Myself in Britain (2015), won the Christian living book of the year in the UK.

She writes for publications such as globally recognized Our Daily Bread and New Daylight, and is part of the God Hears Her community. She has an MA in Christian spirituality from Heythrop College, University of London, and enjoys leading retreats, including at El Palmeral in Spain, Lee Abbey, Devon, and Penhurst Retreat Centre in East Sussex.
